LATEST: Iconic filmmaker MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI has been laid to rest in his native Italy, with stars including director WIM WENDERS and actress DANIELA SILVERO in attendance.
Antonioni - renowned for his Oscar nominated 1966 movie Blow-Up - died peacefully at his home in Rome on Monday (31Jul07) at the age of 94.
His funeral was held on Wednesday (01Aug07) at Ferrara’s San Giorgio cathedral in northern Italy with his actress wife Enrica Fico leading the hundreds of mourners who had turned up to pay tribute to the director.
Referring to his filmmaking skills, Fico told the mourners at the ceremony, "His look was very special, truly unique." German moviemaker Wenders hailed the 1995 film Al di la Delle Nuvole, which he had co-directed with Antonioni, as an experience "beyond the clouds".
He says, "Michelangelo introduced me to Ferrara. I realised how much light came to his mind and to his eyes from this place.
"It’s hard to summarise what the maestro left. Certainly, he created a new image of the 20th-century man." Blow-Up star Silvero also paid her respects to the director, saying, "He was a great friend. For cinema, especially Italian cinema, he represented everything." Antonioni has been buried next to his parents’ grave in the town’s cemetery.

American TV star DUANE ‘DOG’ CHAPMAN is set to escape all charges relating to a 2003 bounty hunting mission in Mexico, according to U.S. reports.
The star of Dog The Bounty Hunter had travelled with two members of his crew, including his son, to Mexico to capture serial rapist Andrew Luster - the heir to the Max Factor cosmetics empire - in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast in June (03).
But Chapman fell foul of the Mexican legal system by embarking on the mission, because bounty hunting is deemed illegal in the Latin American country.
Chapman, his son Leland and their colleague Tim Chapman - who is not related to Duane’s family - were all briefly detained and charged with deprivation of liberty after their success, but TMZ.com reports the charges could be dropped after the crew’s lawyers received "a favourable ruling".
Chapman’s attorney says, "(Duane) has received a favourable ruling from the people in Puerto Vallarta. The extent of that ruling is unknown as we are still in the process of translating it." Luster is currently serving a 124-year jail term after he was convicted in the U.S. in 2003.

Actress SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR turned down a lead role in STARDUST - because she didn’t want to be apart from husband FREDDIE PRINZE JR.
The Buffy The Vampire Slayer star married Prinze Jr. in 2002 and the couple made a vow to avoid conflicting work schedules so they could spend more time together.
But the promise meant Gellar missed out on a part in the new fantasy adventure movie starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer - because the film was being shot in Scotland when Prinze Jr. was filming in the U.S.
She explains, "I turned it down because it was Freddie’s turn in New York. I would have loved to have done it - are you kidding? But it was Freddie’s turn."

The late MARILYN MONROE is the subject of a new documentary which claims to expose vital information and evidence pointing to the screen star’s alleged murder.
Keya Morgan, a dealer in historical documents and manuscripts, is not convinced with the official cause of Monroe’s death - that she died of an overdose of sleeping pills in August 1962.
Morgan is convinced there is more to the mysterious circumstances surrounding her untimely death and made the documentary after becoming friends with Monroe’s ex-husbands, James Dougherty and Arthur Miller.
The film is tentatively titled Death on Helena Dr., and features interviews with Monroe’s neighbour Abe Landau, Beverly Hills detective Lynn Franklin, former Los Angeles Police Chief Darryl Gates and LAPD Officer Jack Clements, who was the first on the scene the night of the actress’ death.
He tells the New York Daily News, "I have interviewed the FBI agent who is now in his late 80s, with prostate cancer, who was listening in on Marilyn in a van outside her home the night she died.
"He saw (then U.S. Attorney General) Bobby Kennedy and other men go inside the house. He heard them screaming and yelling in the guest cottage. They were in the guest cottage, not in her bedroom where her body was found." News of the new documentary follows recent plans by British author Keith Badman to release a book naming Monroe’s alleged ‘killers’.

Rapper PIMP C has retracted the controversial comments he made about the city of Atlanta to a U.S. music magazine - and issued a grovelling apology to his fans in the state of Georgia.
In a recent interview with Ozone magazine, the UGK member hit out at people in Atlanta claiming to be part of the South’s hip-hop movement - led by native rappers T.I. and Ludacris.
He said, "Atlanta is not the South. When you go to Atlanta what does your clock say? When you get off the plane from Los Angeles or Texas, what time do it be over there? (sic) Atlanta is East Coast time. You n**gas ain’t in the South." Pimp C, real name Chad Butler, has now dismissed the remarks as "bulls**t" and expressed his sorrow at the comments.
In a statement, he says, "To all my Atlanta fans and friends, I want to say I apologise for my statement in the Ozone magazine about Atlanta not being the south!! That was a bulls**t statement!! Atlanta is and has always been the dirty ‘mthfkn’ South!!" But the rapper has refused to apologise for his verbal attacks on R&B singer Ne-Yo and rap mogul Russell Simmons, which were made in the same interview.

Singer/actor MARC ANTHONY’s soundtrack album for his new movie EL CANTANTE has entered the Billboard Latin Album chart in the number one spot.
Anthony stars opposite his wife Jennifer Lopez in the biopic of salsa singer Hector Lavoe and the soundtrack has ended Grupo Montez De Durango’s three-week reign on the charts, with Agarrese slipping to second place.
Daddy Yankee’s El Cartel moves down one spot to number three, while Wisin Y Yandel Presentan: Los Vaqueros The Wild Wild Mixes is another new entry at fourth place, followed by Camila’s Todo Cambio in fifth position.
In the singles chart, heart-throb Enrique Iglesias has continued his hold on the top spot, with his track Dimelo, extending his chart run to 14 weeks at number one.
Duelo’s Olvidame Tu jumps 13 spots to claim second place, while Aventura remains at number three with Mi Corazoncito.
Meanwhile, La Arrolladora Banda’s De Ti Exclusivo and Conjunto Primavera’s Basta Ya round out the top five at fourth and fifth place respectively.

Shock rocker MARILYN MANSON squandered his band’s earnings on "sick and disturbing" Nazi memorabilia and a skeleton of a young Chinese girl, according to court papers filed in Los Angeles.
Manson is being sued by his former keyboardist Madonna Wayne Gacy - real name Stephen Gregory Bier Jr. - for non-payment during his time in the singer’s band.
Gacy claims Manson, his business manager, lawyer and the band’s manager of "filching millions of dollars" from the band’s earnings.
Bier’s lawyer, Keith Fink, says Manson promised Bier "partnership proceeds" from the band in 1993, but used the money to pay for "a multimillion-dollar home, had a lavish wedding (to Dita Von Teese) in Ireland, gave an engagement ring to Dita von Teese" and collected Nazi artifacts and taxidermy.
Fink says "Manson devised a campaign to drive Bier out of the band and rob him of his entitlement. Litigation will begin immediately." Manson’s manager was unable to comment.

Veteran rocker KEITH RICHARDS often played the guitar to entertain his ailing mother in the last days of her life - but his efforts weren’t always appreciated, according to the star himself.
The Rolling Stone guitarist, 63, lost his mother Doris in April (07), aged 91, after a long battle with cancer.
But Richards insists his mother was "acid-tongued" right up until her death.
He says, "I sat on the end of her bed two days before she kicked the bucket.
I brought round a guitar and sat there and played to her. She’s gasping by now, she’s out of there, y’know. ‘Bye bye mum, see you tomorrow.’ "Next morning, she wakes up and tells my secretary, who goes round to see her every day: ‘Did you hear Keith play? He was a bit out of tune.’ To the end, man. Acid."

ROLLING STONE KEITH RICHARDS has revisited the controversy surrounding his comment about snorting his father’s ashes - insisting his denial was only in relation to mixing it with cocaine.
The guitarist’s confession sparked a worldwide media frenzy earlier this year (07) when he is alleged to have made the revelation to British music magazine NME.
Richards promptly released a statement addressing the comment, claiming he was only joking about inhaling the ashes of his dead dad Bert with the illegal drug.
But the 63-year-old has admitted there was some truth to the story.
He says, "The cocaine bit was rubbish (not true). I said I chopped him up like cocaine, not with. I’d opened his box up and said, ‘Jesus, I’ve got to do something with dad, y’know, plant the oak tree.’ "I pulled the lid off and out comes a bit of dad on the dining room table.
I’m going, ‘I can’t use the brush and dustpan for this’. So you just gotta like, put it together.
"What I found out is that ingesting your ancestors is a very respectable way of… y’know, he went down a treat."

LINDSAY LOHAN’s mother DINA is set for another court date after being accused of fraud for failing to pay back a $400,000 (£200,000) loan to a friend.
Las Vegas businessman Antonio Almeida filed a lawsuit in May 2006, claiming Dina failed to return the money he lent her four years ago to kick-start daughter Lindsay’s music career.
Almeida’s lawyer, A. Raymond Hamrick, says some of the money was used to record songs with Gloria Estefan’s husband, Emilio Estefan.
But the Mean Girls actress parted company with Estefan after securing a deal with Casablanca Records, which released her album, A Little More Personal (Raw).
Hamrick tells New York Gossip column, PageSix, "My clients were out their money." But Dina’s lawyer, David Chesnoff says, "You mean the funds he claimed he lent her?" Dina is currently fighting estranged husband Michael in court for custody of their two youngest children Aliana and Cody (Dakota).

Hollywood actress THANDIE NEWTON will always be reminded of her childhood battle with bulimia, thanks to scars on her hands.
The Crash star began suffering from the eating disorder when she was 14 while training for a ballet exam.
She says, "I ate nothing but cottage cheese. It didn’t seem so strange. My mum was a health visitor, so we never had butter in our house, we had Flora (margarine). I had a very healthy, nutrition-conscious upbringing." But Newton says the disorder turned into an obsession when she started dating an older man.
She reveals, "We used to go out to dinner all the time, and he’d get so excited about eating… and it must have been my way of separating myself from him - by becoming bulimic.
"I would go back to the flat that we were sharing at the time, and I’d throw up." Newton confesses she battled the disorder for much of her teenage years, but had "horrible bulimia for about a year".
She adds, "I’ve still got the scars on my knuckles from where I put my fingers down my throat."

LATEST: Bollywood star SANJAY DUTT is "doing good" since being jailed for six years over the deadly 1993 blasts in Mumbai.
Dutt was jailed on Tuesday (31Jul07) for illegal possession of arms in relation to the serial bombings which claimed 257 lives.
The actor’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde said Dutt is coping well with prison life adding, "He is doing good, that’s all I will say." Jail authorities say Dutt is being treated like his fellow prisoners - eating a basic Indian diet and wearing prison clothes.
A spokesman says, "There’s no special treatment, his day started today like that of any other inmate." Dutt can appeal against his sentence.
