GYLLENHAAL SHOCKED BY RACIST RECOVERY PROGRAMMES
MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL was stunned by the racism she encountered in prison recovery programmes while researching her role in SHERRYBABY.
Gyllenhaal plays a woman trying to rebuild her life after being released from prison in the movie, and drew on experiences of ex-inmates in halfway houses to inspire her performance.
She says, "It was shocking how hard it is to get out of prison and get your feet back on the ground.
"There was so much obvious racism - I only saw maybe three white girls."
