TOILET TROUBLE FOR SUPERMODEL WEK
Supermodel ALEK WEK was so naive when she boarded a plane for the first time for the trip that was to take her away from her native Sudan - she needed to be shown how to use the toilet.
The catwalk star was just 14 when she left the war in the Sudan and headed off to London to start a new life with her sisters.
And Wek admits it took just an hour into the flight to make her realise just how great her adventure was.
She tells Vogue magazine, "The flight attendants tried to make us feel at home. They brought us croissants, but (sister) Altheig and I weren’t used to that kind of food, and we got stomach cramps.
"When I went to the bathroom, I realised there was something else I didn’t know anything about: the loo might as well have been a scientific laboratory.
I’d seen perhaps two flush toilets in my whole life, so I understood the concept, but, my God, where was the flush?’ "And the paper - at home we always used newspaper or leaves. I wasn’t used to this fine tissue. I was too embarrassed to ask for help… Finally, to my relief, a flight attendant showed me what to do."
