Britain’s Princess Eugenie has been accused of joining a racist group on social networking site facebook.
The 17-year-old princess - the daughter of Sarah Ferguson and her ex-husband Prince Andrew - sparked outrage by signed up to the group entitled ‘Tassilo is a Spearchucker’, described as ‘for all those who believe Tassilo Bismarck is a black’.
Tassilo Bismarck, 18, is white and a descendant of the 19th century German chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. He is listed as one of Eugenie’s 412 friends on the site. The offending group was set up by Tassilo’s brother Nikolai and has 43 members.
Lester Holloway, editor of Blink, the black news website and a member of the anti-racism campaign group the 1990 Trust, branded the group ‘very offensive’.
He told Britain’s Daily Express newspaper: ‘It’s very sad to see these ancient and racist stereotypes being joked about in this way by people who should know better. It harks back to the images of Africans as spear-wielding cannibals used in past centuries to show Africans being less developed and to justify colonialism.
‘Such images are not only outdated but also dehumanising and very offensive. Most of society these days recognises that these terms are inappropriate. It’s a pity Princess Eugenie and her friends are stuck in a time warp. They need to get into the 21st century.’ Eugenie’s sister Princess Beatrice, 18, also has her own page on Facebook. Both girls list Richard Branson’s daughter Holly and Bob Geldof’s daughter Pixie among their friends.
A spokeswoman for Princess Eugenie was unavailable for comment.
