Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and husband Prince Philip are planning a second honeymoon in Malta to mark their diamond wedding anniversary.
The royal couple plan to celebrate being married for 60 years by returning to the Mediterranean island where they enjoyed many happy holidays as a young married couple.
The queen and the Duke of Edinburgh – who married at London’s Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947 - will spend a few days on the island on their way to Uganda for an official Commonwealth visit.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: ‘Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh will pay a short private visit to Malta, as guests of the Government of Malta, en route to Uganda for the state visit and Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November.’ The royal couple lived in Malta during the early days of their marriage when Philip was on naval service and the queen was still known as Princess Elizabeth.
It is the only place where the pair have lived together outside of Britain and the queen has previously spoken of her ‘deep affection’ for the country.
They spent several periods on the island between 1949 and 1951 while Philip served on the destroyer Chequers with the Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet.
Elizabeth divided her time between England, where her young son Charles remained with his grandparents, and Malta, leaving in 1950 to give birth to the Princess Anne.
Elizabeth and Philip’s first honeymoon was at royal Scottish estate Balmoral, and Lord Mountbatten’s Hampshire home Broadlands.
