Veteran actress LAUREN BACALL was pleasantly surprised her co-star-turned-husband HUMPHREY BOGART wasn’t a real life bad boy, unlike his reputation onscreen.
The To Have and Have Not star never thought twice about marrying Bogart, despite the fact she was 19 and he was 44.
She says, "People surprise you. Bogey was an avid reader. I thought he was one of those ‘deez, dem and doze’ guys. I didn’t know his father was a doctor and his mother was an artist. I thought, ‘Ugh, lordy!’, but he spoke well and was well read.
"Certainly Bogey was the most gigantic influence on me in the most positive way and I was very, very lucky to have been so moulded as a teenager by this older man who was younger than I was in so many ways.
"He had incredible energy - he had more energy than I did at 19. He was physically able to do more."

The blonde star says it’s much easier for men to make their way through showbusiness than actresses.
She says, "I’ve done my share of films I’d like to forget. Still, I don’t know anybody who hasn’t, especially actresses.
"Ed Norton came into this business and has only done amazing films because he has that option - he’s a man and those roles are available.

THE SIMPSON creator MATT GROENING nearly quit a career in animation after his father told him he would be unsuccessful.
The Emmy award-winning cartoonist was often criticised by his father, Homer, for lacking in artistic talent so turned to a career in writing.
Groening moved to Los Angeles to pursue a writing career and created the comic strip Life in Hell. Hit TV show The Simpsons took off 10 years later.
He says, "My father, who was a cartoonist, told me, ‘Your drawing skills aren’t that great, you will never make a living with your cartoons.’ "So I felt I would make my living through some kind of writing - I didn’t think I would make a living as a cartoonist because I didn’t feel I drew well enough."

Funnyman STEVE MARTIN is planning a second trip down the aisle with long-term love ANNE STRINGFIELD.
The Father Of The Bride actor, 61, and the former New Yorker journalist, 35, have been dating since 2002.

A U.S. TV series based on the TERMINATOR movies has axed a storyline because of its similarities to the Virginia Tech massacre.
The Sarah Connors Chronicles is scheduled to be aired next year (08) and follows a mother trying to protect her son from mankind.
But a scene where character John Connor is attacked at school has been axed by TV network Fox, following the mass killings at the university in Virginia in April (07).
Josh Friedman, an executive producer on the Fox TV show, says he is working on a revised storyline.
The title role has been given to British actress Lena Headey, who has previously appeared in The Brothers Grimm and Ripley’s Game.

Legendary Cuban band BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB braved heavy rain to bring a taste of the Caribbean to Essex, England on Saturday (21Jul07).
The Chan Chan hitmakers, comprising of trumpeter Manuel ‘Guajiro’ Mirabal, bassist Orlando ‘Cachaito’ Lopez, guitarist Manuel Galban and trombone player Jesus ‘Aguaje’ Ramos, performed to thousands of mackintosh-wearing fans at the 17th century Audley End House.

Music mogul SIMON COWELL re-hired TV personality LOUIS WALSH as a judge on British TV show X-FACTOR via a text message.
The Irish music impresario was fired from TV talent search in March (07) after three years of fronting the show alongside Cowell and Sharon Osbourne.
But Cowell admitted it was a mistake to axe Walsh and sent him a text message, begging him to take back his job.
Walsh says, "Simon sent a text saying, ‘We’re sort of missing you.’ Sharon sent one saying, ‘We wish you were here.’ "I knew they were missing me. I did wonder whether it was a wind-up when Simon said, ‘We’d love to have you back.’ "He was serious and told me to prepare for a call. Ten days later, the producer rang and said, ‘We want you back.’ I said, ‘When?’ He said, ‘Monday!’"

LATEST: JAGUARES frontman SAUL HERNANDEZ bounced back from his recent throat surgery to wow the crowds at Los Angeles’ Gibson Amphitheatre on Saturday night (21Jul07).
The Mexican singer was forced to cancel the group’s gigs after doctors found a benign growth on his vocals chords and performed an emergency operation to remove it.
Hernandez managed to recover in time to perform on Saturday, but fans noticed occasionally wavering in his strong vocals.
The star paid tribute to the hundreds of women who have mysteriously vanished in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez, saying, "This goes to all the innocent girls 13 years and above who have brutally disappeared. In reality we need fewer machos and more men."

JOHN LENNON’ son JULIAN has denied trying to follow in his father’s footsteps by making a movie about the environment.
Lennon junior produced documentary The Gathering: Return of the Whale Dreamers which premiered at this year’s (07) Cannes Festival.
But the 44-year-old denies he is trying to imitate his father’s political protests.
He says, "I admire what he did enormously. But we are not jumping on the bandwagon.
"We never did it to make money, we started ten years ago so we were before Al Gore and 9/11."

GUNS N’ ROSES’ original line-up will reform to mark the 20th anniversary of the band’s album APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION - but without lead singer AXL ROSE.
Drummer Stephen Adler claims the event will take place at Los Angeles’ Key Club on 28 July - and include original members Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan.
The Key Club’s website advertises performances by the drummer’s band Adler’s Appetite and LA Guns - the band that spawned Guns N’ Roses.
Adler writes on the site, "I’ll be down there with my band and Slash, Izzy (Stradlin, guitarist) and Duff (McKagan, bass) will be there too. It’s gonna be great." Although Rose is not expected - Adler insists a full reunion will eventually happen: "Axl and I spoke to each other in Las Vegas recently, and I know there’s a chance. It’s just too big.
"Whatever the Stones make when they play, we’d triple it. It’d be ridiculous not to do it. He can’t be that goofy."

Hip-hop stars LIL’ WAYNE and JA RULE have been arrested on separate gun possession charges in New York.
Lil’ Wayne - real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr - was arrested in Manhattan shortly after his performance at the Beacon Theater on Sunday night (22Jul07).
Police said Carter was found carrying a .40 caliber pistol after he was stopped for smoking marijuana.
In a separate incident, rapper Ja Rule - real name Jeffrey Atkins - and two associates were arrested in Manhattan for speeding. A .40 caliber pistol was also found inside his vehicle.

Tomohito, cousin of Emperor Akihito and fifth in line to the throne, left Tokyo’s Imperial Household Hospital on Saturday (21.07.07) and is now expected to resume his royal duties while continuing with his rehabilitation programme.
The prince, the eldest son of Prince Mikasa and Princess Yuriko, was admitted to hospital last month and his treatment was overseen by experts from the Kurihama Alcoholism Centre.
The 61-year-old’s alcoholism has been seen as an embarrassment to the royal family as they believe his problems could harm their image.
However, Tomohito said he went public because ‘there is nothing to hide’.
He said his problems worsened over recent years because of family problems and the controversy he caused over comments he said about the possibility of the imperial succession law changing to allow a female emperor.
In a 2005 essay, the prince - who was successfully treated for throat cancer last year - claimed Japan should exhaust all other options, including bringing back concubines, before allowing a woman to ascend to its imperial throne.

Judge Juan del Olmo ruled the image, which ran on the front page of weekly satirical magazine El Jueves, was an insult to the royal family.
He said on Friday (20.07.07): ‘The cartoon struck at the honour and dignity of the people represented.’ The judge also ordered the publishers of the magazine to give him the names of the cartoonists responsible for the derogatory drawing, warning they could face libel action.
Slandering or defaming the Spanish Royal Family carries a two-year prison sentence.
The cartoon was published after the government announced it would pay couples nearly £1,700 for each new baby born or adopted, in an effort to boost Spain’s birth rate.
In the cartoon, a smiling Felipe, 39, tells his 34-year-old wife, who is kneeling on the bed in front of him: ‘Do you realize that if you get pregnant it will be the closest that I come to working in my life!’ El Jueves director Albert Monteys Homer said the court ruling was ‘a direct attack on freedom of expression’.
The magazine posted its front-cover image on its website with a statement reading: ‘We are graphic humorists, and we are conscious of our obligations to what our readers want, which is to explore the limits of freedom of expression.’ The royal palace said it had no part in asking for the magazine’s withdrawal, but offered no further comment.
