ISAAC HAYES stunned fans at a Stax Records tribute concert in Hollywood on Wednesday night (18Jul07) by mumbling his way through his set and stammering to the audience.
The soul man, who turns 65 next month (Aug07), was headlining the 50 Years of Stax concert at the Hollywood Bowl - but his puzzling performance left many fans worrying about his health.
Hayes, who checked into a Memphis, Tennessee hospital 18 months ago citing exhaustion, ambled gingerly onto the Bowl’s stage and seemed lost at the keyboards during the start of his performance.
Later addressing the crowd, Hayes struggled to get his words out, stuttering about a new album he was planning.
His lacklustre performance continued, leading many fans to walk out.
One Stax devotee says, "It was awful. He just seemed lost onstage.
"I went from feeling sorry for the guy to feeling sorry about the money I spent on a ticket to see him perform at the Bowl. There was a mass exodus midway through his set when it became clear there was something wrong." Calls to Hayes’ publicist weren’t returned at press time.
Supporting Hayes at the Hollywood Bowl Stax celebration were Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Angie Stone and Mabel John.

A bomb disposal team were called to carry out a controlled explosion at Glamis Castle after workmen unearthed a bomb in the grounds of the Scottish residence.
The unexploded World War II phosphorous bomb was discovered while staff were widening an access road to the castle early yesterday morning.
Estate manager David Adams said: ‘It’s caused a bit of disruption but we have coped well.
‘We’ve had to bring everyone in by a different entrance as the main gate is closed off.’ The Explosives Ordnance Division were called in from Edinburgh, and the Tayside Fire and Rescue service also attended the site. The A928 was closed off in both directions as a precautionary measure while the bomb was investigated.
It was moved into a skip where a controlled explosion was carried out at about four o’clock in the afternoon.
The area where the bomb was found is still cordoned off while a search is conducted for any phosphorus which may have leaked into the soil.
Phosphorus bombs were issued to Britain’s Home Guard during WWII for volunteer soldiers to throw at invaders. Glamis, in Angus, is one of Sotland’s most famous castles. The queen’s younger sister, the late Princess Margaret, was born there in 1930.
The castle is also famous as being the setting for Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ and there are many legends and folklores involving Glamis. It is currently the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and is run by the National Trust for Scotland.

The royal couple happily took a break from their duties to enjoy a day out with five-year-old Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, who turns four next month, and 21-month-old Prince Emmanuel, in the picturesque Belgian Ardennes region.

The young royals screeched with delight as they ran across a 15-meter-high bridge and exhausted themselves making the most of the outdoor wooden playing zones.
But while Elisabeth and Gabriel were old enough to find their own fun, little Emmanuel needed a little help from dad crossing some monkey bars.
The Hello! website reports, Mathilde also showed her sense of fun joining her three children on a wooden seesaw.
Last week, Philippe helped his mother Queen Paolo welcome Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in Brussels and lead commemorations to remember the Battle of Passchendaele, one of World War I’s bloodiest battles.

Scotland’s Lennoxlove House, in East Lothian, features a four-poster bed reputedly used by the 16th-century monarch while she was in captivity at Arden Hall, in North Yorkshire.
The stately home, which also boasts a dungeon, a private chapel and walls lined with masterpieces by the likes of Sir Henry Raeburn, will be available to hire for £7,500-a-day from this weekend (21.07.07).
A £3 million renovation project, which took 18-months, removed the property’s dry rot problem, added a central heating system and created 11 suites, including the Lady’s Bower, where guests can sleep in the 500-year-old bed Mary is said to have slept in.
The house also contains a collection of treasures such as Mary’s death mask, which has been in the possession of Lenoxlove House’s former owners, the Douglas- Hamilton family, for more than 250 years.
Three generations of the Douglas-Hamilton family, who lived at Lennoxlove from 1946 until the late 1980s, gathered yesterday (18.07.07) to reopen their former home to the public.

The king has been acknowledged for his tireless efforts to secure food supplies for the world’s underdeveloped countries.
He will receive the award next Monday (23.07.07) from former US governor of Iowa Robert Ray, who represents the World Food Prize Foundation, at Bangkok’s Chitralada Palace.
The king will be the first Southeast Asian leader to receive the prize which is a special honour reserved for heads of state and international leaders who have made great contributions to help enhance human life. World Food Prize Foundation President Kenneth Quinn said: ‘The king has displayed an unwavering dedication to the well being of his subjects, and a deep concern that they have sufficient food and proper nutrition.
‘His Majesty’s commitment to his subjects has been reflected in the more that 2,000 royal projects he has established throughout the kingdom.’ The World Food Prize recognises contributions in any field involved in world food supply.

In an unprecedented move, the monarch will reportedly cut short her annual break at Balmoral - the Scottish estate she and husband Prince Philip retreat to every summer - to return to London to pay her respects to her former daughter-in-law.
When Diana was tragically killed in Paris on August 31, 1997, the queen was criticised for deciding to stay at Balmoral with Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry, instead of returning to the capital.
The then prime minister Tony Blair advised the queen to return to London to acknowledge her grieving public.
William and Harry are believed to have drawn up the guest list for the August 31 service at the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks, although the invites are yet to be sent out.
They reportedly want to invite their stepmother, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who was blamed by Diana for the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles.
The princes and the queen are said to want the memorial to be low key.
A source told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper: ‘There certainly won’t be any singing from Elton John and there will be very few of Diana’s showbiz acquaintances invited.’ The memorial will coincide with a special opening of the Althrop estate where Diana is buried.
Her brother, Earl Spencer, normally closes the Northampton family estate on the anniversary but has made an exception and thousands of people are expected to go there to pay their respects.

American entertainer MERV GRIFFIN has been admitted to hospital with prostate cancer.
The 82-year-old former host of game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel Of Fortune is being treated at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles - where he was taken on Wednesday (18Jul07) - for cancer discovered during a routine check-up earlier this month (Jul07), according to his spokesperson.
His son Tony says Merv is resting and "his sense of humour and optimistic outlook remain intact." He adds, "He’s getting great care and his medical team want to monitor his progress in a controlled setting." In a statement, Merv says, "I’d rather play Jeopardy! than live it. I was ready for a vacation; however, this wasn’t the destination I had in mind."

Italian fashion queen DONATELLA VERSACE has praised her daughter ALLEGRA during her battle with anorexia.
In March (07) the 21-year-old heir of the Versace empire began seeking medical treatment for the eating disorder, which she had suffered from for many years.

The United States publisher of J.K. ROWLING’s latest book HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS are suing two companies who broke a sales embargo on the novel.
Scholastic have filed suit in Illinois against DeepDiscount.com and book distributor Levy Entertainment for allowing customers to purchase the book before its official publication date of 21 July (07).
Scholastic are seeking unspecified damages from the two firms for "complete and flagrant violation of the agreements that they knew were part of the carefully constructed release of this eagerly awaited book".
A statement from DeepDiscount.com’s parent company Infinity Resources reads, "We take the situation very seriously and are conducting an internal investigation."
