The incident was caught on film and features in BBC1 documentary ‘A Year With The Queen’ following the queen as she prepared for her 80th birthday to be screened in the autumn.
Leibovitz tells the queen she thinks the portrait photograph will look better without her crown, to which the queen snaps: ‘Less dressy? What do you think this is? I’m not changing anything.’ Her Majesty then walks out.
The 81-year-old monarch does return to sit for the celebrity photographer, but is also shown telling her: ‘I’ve had enough of dressing like this, thank you very much.’ Leibovitz’s final portrait photograph feature the monarch sitting on a gilt chair in Buckingham Palace’s White Drawing Room, wearing a crown, ornate jewellery and a lavish white gown with a white fur stole.
Royal photographer Arthur Edwards for Britain’s The Sun newspaper believes Leibovitz pushed the queen too far.
He told BBC Radio Five Live: ‘I think Annie Leibovitz went over the mark.
‘Every photographer just asks for one more ‘can we do this, can we do that?’ but the queen wasn’t having it, and when she was asked to take off her tiara she threw a tantrum. ‘It was great to see the queen can get into a strop.
‘Prince Charles has given me a couple of rollickings over the time, and now I know where he gets it from.’ The BBC documentary shows the queen and other members of the royal family performing their royal duties. It includes the queen’s 80th birthday celebrations, the British State Opening of Parliament, and the queen and her husband Prince Phillip’s recent US tour. BBC1 controller Peter Fincham said the broadcasting corporation were given ‘remarkable access’ to the royal family for the show.

The show, being held at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum, marks the 25th anniversary of the princess’ tragic death in a car accident.
The highlight of the exhibition is Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, which she wore when she married Prince Rainier in 1956.
The Philadelphia-born actress donated the gown to the Museum of Philadelphia and this is the first time it has returned to Monaco.
The show also features dozens of the princess’ magazine covers and trailers from her many movies.
Albert and his sisters, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie, gave the exhibition their full support. They even released never-before-seen letters and photographs, as well as their mother’s entire wardrobe.
The show also includes letters from Cary Grant, Bing Crosby and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
The exhibition continues until Sept 23 and will then be staged in London.

Charles was presenting service medals to 44 soldiers from nine regiment of the Army Air Corps at Clarence House - Charles’ official London home - yesterday (11.07.07), when he was caught in the embarrassing pose.
The prince was going down the line pinning a medal to chest of each soldier in recognition of their regiment’s tour of Afghanistan, when he seemed particularly taken with the blonde woman.
Charles stopped to chat with the female soldier and animatedly waved his hands around in front of her, unfortunately giving the waiting photographers the perfect opportunity to snap him in the compromising position.
The regiment, who are based at Dishforth, in North Yorkshire, served in Afghanistan for 13 months. They all received Operation Herrick service medals, named after the campaign codename.
As he walked along the parade the prince chatted about the conflict in Afghanistan with Sergeant Nick Cole, who has flown Apache helicopters in the highly dangerous Helmand Province.
Sergeant Cole told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: ‘The prince said a lot of lead was flying out there and I said ‘Yes, quite a bit.’ ‘ Captain Nigel Tench, who also collected his Operation Herrick service medal, said Charles praised the soldiers for their service. He said: ‘The prince said he was very proud of them and said what a good job we’d done.’

The Zimbabwe-born blonde danced the night away with her pals at Mayfair’s exclusive Mahiki bar, while sipping on pricey cocktails.
One of the party girl’s favourite drinks is the Treasure Chest cocktail - a £100 beverage designed to serve eight people, which contains rum, brandy, peach liqueur and champagne.
However, Chelsy showed that while she was happy to splash out of the expensive drinks, she was still a down-to-earth girl and stepped out wearing a £45 dress.
The cream mini-dress, decorated with a brown floral motif, came from high-street store Warehouse.
The university graduate - whose father is multi-millionaire safari operator - complimented her look with some sexy brown boots.
Chelsy is not the only royal girlfriend to shop on the high-street.

The blonde singer claims she hasn’t had any work done yet, but refused to rule out surgery in the future.
She told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: "I haven’t had any plastic surgery. But maybe after having kids, if my boobs dropped down to my belly button, I would get them lifted. But you know, my boobs are real." Simpson, 27, has also revealed her ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ co-star Willie Nelson passed on some of his acting secrets to her.
She said: "Willie Nelson taught me an amazing thing. He memorises his lines by writing them as a song, and they become a melody to him." The model-and-singer - who has an 18-year-old daughter Daisy with Bush frontman Gavin - claims the singer abandoned Daisy when he recently discovered he was more than her godfather.
Pearl - who is married to Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey - told Britain’s The Times newspaper: "Gavin was already in Daisy’s life as her godfather, and came to me saying I think we need to find out if I am the father. But when we set up meetings to have DNA tests he didn’t show up. It got weird and he stopped returning my calls.
"This guy’s a millionaire - he can at least give Danny back the money he’s spent. It’s been a traumatic time for us.
"I lost my best friend, Daisy lost her godfather and doesn’t have a dad. And she lost self-worth. Because when someone rejects you like that, you wonder what’s wrong with you.

Pearl said she does not think she will ever heal the rift with Gavin.
She said: "I really don’t care if I never see him ever again. He’s been incredibly vile. He saw Daisy at first, but he was always rude to her, he made it feel like it was her fault. The Welsh actress revealed her 62-year-old husband wooed her with the chat-up line, ‘I want to father you children’, but made sure he was sincere before making a commitment to him.

The ‘Music and Lyrics’ actress, who allegedly "made out" with ‘Scrubs’ star Zach Braff last week (03.07.07), was seen kissing director Spike Jonze on Tuesday (10.07.07).
Drew and Spike, who were first seen together on Valentine’s Day this year, watched British band Klaxons at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre. They were spotted cuddling and kissing in a VIP booth, and Drew "playfully traced" Spike’s moustache before they kissed "for a good 10 seconds", according to People magazine.
Just last week, Drew, was seen with Zach in New York. The pair, who met at a ‘Saturday Night Live’ after-party in February, were also seen dancing and canoodling at New York’s Beauty Bar nightclub in June.
A source said: "There was a moment when they kissed and it almost seemed blissful." Zach, 32, who recently revealed he is "dating" someone on his personal blog, was seen with Drew last Tuesday (03.07.07).
The pair went for a "romantic" stroll through New York’s SoHo neighbourhood and the ‘Garden State’ star had his arm wrapped around the 32-year-old actress.

The ‘Toxic’ singer and the burly security guard were spotted enjoying a candlelit dinner in the Windows Lounge of Los Angeles’ Four Seasons hotel last Wednesday (04.07.07) after which Damon reportedly stayed the night at her Beverly Hills mansion.
On Thursday (05.07.07), the couple attended a Los Angeles performance of the hit musical ‘Wicked’ together.
Britney and Damon only stayed for 45 minutes of the show – which the 25-year-old singer has seen several times – and moved on to Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont hotel for drinks.
A witness told Us Weekly magazine: "Britney giggled and kissed Damon as he affectionately touched her face." On Sunday (08.07.07), the bodyguard accompanied the singer and her sons – 22-month-old Sean Preston and 10-month-old Jayden James – to church.
Britney carried sleeping Jayden while Damon carried Sean and comforted him when he started crying.
The ‘Baby One More Time’ singer was rumoured to be dating her alcohol counsellor John Sundahl.
He said of her last week: ‘Yes, she is still a practising alcoholic.’

The fashion designer - daughter of Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney - is expecting her third child with husband Alasdhair Willis, just seven months after her second child was born.
A source told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper: "Paul loves having family around him. It has been what has been getting him through his tough divorce from Heather Mills.
"He will be overjoyed with the new addition to the family." The couple’s new addition is due to be born at the end of this year.
Stella, 35, gave birth to daughter Bailey Linda Olywn on December 8 last year.
Her first child, son Miller Alasdhair James, was born on February 25 2005.
It has been reported Stella will ask close friends supermodel Kate Moss or designer Sadie Frost to be the godmother of her next baby.
Meanwhile, Stella is set to make her London Fashion Week debut after more than a decade in the fashion industry.
Stella’s main collection will continue to show in Paris, but her spring/summer 2008 line for Adidas will close London Fashion Week on September 20.
