Harry and William told 63,000 fans packed into London’s new Wembley Stadium that their Concert for Diana was the perfect way to celebrate ‘all that our mother loved in life’ on what would have been her 46th birthday.
William said: ‘This evening is about all that my mother loved in life, her music, her dance, her charities and her family and friends.’ Harry then introduced one of Diana’s favourite bands, Duran Duran, who got the crowd on their feet with hits ‘Sunrise’, ‘Wild Boys’ and ‘Rio’.
The stellar line-up also included Diana’s close friend Elton John, Status Quo, Lily Allen, Take That, Will Young and Kanye West.
William and Harry danced along to the music in the Royal Box, getting particularly animated during Nelly Furtado’s performance of her upbeat hit ‘Maneater’.
The show also featured a number of star presenters including Sienna Miller, Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland, each of whom paid tribute to the princess before introducing the acts.
David Beckham, who introduced penultimate act Take That, said: ‘We are all here to celebrate the incredible life of the greatest lady and human being we have seen for many years. She was the people’s princess, always has been and always will be.’ The show, which began at 4pm and lasted for more than six hours, also featured performances from the British Royal Ballet, for who Diana was the patron, and numbers from her favourite Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals performed by stars such as Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond.
The show ended as it began with Elton John bringing the day to a crescendo with classic hits ‘Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting’, ‘Are You Ready For Love’ and ‘Tiny Dancer’.
Elton then introduced a touching video tribute to the princess from the historic former South African president Nelson Mandela.
Mandela said: ‘I call upon all of you here at this concert to remember what this concert was for and support the work that continues in Diana’s name.’ Proceeds from the event will go to a series of Princess Diana’s favourite charities, including the National AIDS Trust and homeless charity Centrepoint.
