Belgium’s King Albert II was hospitalised yesterday (26.06.07) after falling and breaking his leg.
The 73-year-old monarch was said to have suffered a fall at his chateau on the outskirts of Brussels.
The royal family announced King Albert has fractured part of his femur and was due to be operated on later that day.
His wife Queen Paola held a bedside vigil at the Saint Jean hospital in Brussels.
Albert came to the throne in 1993 following the death of his older brother King Baudouin.
He and his wife have three children, the 47-year-old Duke of Brabant Philippe Léopold Louis Marie, 45-year-old Astrid Joséphine Charlotte Fabrizia Elisabeth Paola Marie - who is married to the Prince Royal of Hungary and Bohemia - and 43-year-old Laurent Benoit Baudouin Marie.
The king is also believed to have an illegitimate daughter, Delphine Boël, 38, with Belgian aristocrat, Sybille, Baroness de Selys Longchamps.
