SHICOFF PULLS OUT OF SALZBURG FESTIVAL
American tenor NEIL SHICOFF has pulled out of Austria’s Salzburg Festival to distance himself from "intrigues and disappointments".
The singer was recently overlooked for the position of director of Vienna’s State Opera, and Shicoff confesses the rejection has hit him hard.
He’s now taking time out of performing to reassess his priorities and come to terms with his disappointment.
Shicoff, 58, was clear favourite to secure the directorial position, but lost out to Dominique Meyer earlier this month (Jun07).
In a letter to festival director Juergen Flimm, Shicoff admits the decision was a "big surprise" and cancels his part in a new production of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini in Salzburg on 10 August (07).
He will be replaced by German tenor Burkhard Fritz.
