LAST KING OF SCOTLAND JEOPARDISED BY TROPICAL ILLNESS
Filming on THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND was put at risk when cast and crew members contracted near-fatal tropical diseases - with one unfortunate still suffering.
The film, which saw Forest Whitaker pick up an Academy Award earlier this year (07) for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, was almost never completed on time because of ill health on location in Africa.
Producer Lisa Bryer says, "It was very tough on the crew. They were filming 18-hour days and Kevin (Macdonald - director) was pushing them to the absolute max. There were threats of mutiny, not because they didn’t love Kevin or believe in the film, but because they were just so exhausted. There was malaria and dysentery.
"Our poor accountant is still suffering the affects of having full-blown malaria. They were hanging in rags."
