Britain’s Princes William and Harry are to sue Channel 4 over the TV documentary ‘Diana: The Witnesses In The Tunnel’. William and Harry - who pleaded with TV bosses not to screen a picture of their mother Princess Diana being given oxygen while still slumped in the wreckage of the 1997 Paris car crash - have launched legal action accusing the British network of stealing the photograph.
The image, which was taken by French photographer Fabrice Chassery and featured in the documentary broadcast last Wednesday (06.06.07), was confiscated by police investigating the crash 10 years ago.
However, when Chassery met with Channel 4 producer Janice Sutherland this February, she produced eight photos of the tragic scene, including the one he had taken of Diana being treated by paramedics. Chassery was quoted in Britain’s Daily Express newspaper as saying: ‘These pictures were taken away by the Paris police ten years ago and are supposed to still be under lock and key. I told Janice they must have been stolen. We had a number of meetings and were offered thousands of euros.’ Chassery says he and his colleague David Ker - who also took pictures of the tragic tunnel scene - tried to persuade TV bosses not to use the images, because they would ‘upset’ the princes. French police have vowed to look into how the notorious photos ended up in the hands of Channel 4 producers. Channel 4 has refused to comment on the issue, saying the matter is being dealt with by lawyers, but denied they had breached any copyright.
