JOSEPH FAVOURITE WINS WEST END ROLE
A star was born last night (09Jun07) as LEE MEAD was named as the winner of SIR ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’s TV talent contest, ANY DREAM WILL DO.
The programme saw the theatre impressario stage a nationwide search for a new star to take on the leading role in his upcoming musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, in London’s West End.
Mead beat competition from Scottish contestant Keith Jack and blond student Lewis Bradley - who came second and third respectively - to win the public’s vote for the West End role.
The 26-year-old has previously worked as an understudy for hit shows The Phantom Of The Opera and Miss Saigon, and it was this professional theatre background which had made him the favourite to win.
After hearing the results, a stunned Mead said, "I just want to thank everyone so much. And to all of those that voted, I’m going to give you one hell of a show." Lord Lloyd-Webber says, "This guy has never appeared in a lead role before and we shouldn’t underestimate how far he has come." Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat will officially open at the Aldephi Theatre in London on 17 July (07).
