Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko enjoyed dinner with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth last night (29.05.07) to mark the end of their three-day visit to the UK.
The couple were the guests of honour at the intimate dinner, which also included Prince Philip and other dignitaries, in Buckingham Palace’s 1844 Room.
Before the dinner - which included partridge with broad beans and a salad of langoustines and asparagus - Akihito and Michiko were greeted by the queen at the palace’s grand entrance.
The imperial couple also dined with the chancellor of Oxford University and the former governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, during their UK trip.
The Japanese embassy released a statement to say how important the trip was.
It read: ‘The official visit by their majesties should serve to strengthen still further the already excellent relations between Japan and the United Kingdom.’ Their visit to Britain has been part of a 10-day tour of Europe which has seen them to take trips to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden.
