The prince arrived in Kabul on Monday (21.05.07) and visited troops at Kamp Holland in the Uruzgan province yesterday (22.05.07). He also met Dutch troops stationed close to Kandahar airport as part of the International Security Assistance Force.
Willem-Alexander was joined on his visit by the Netherlands’ state secretary for defence Vees van der Knaap. The prince talked at length with the troops and their commander, General McNeill, and said he admired their dedication in difficult circumstances.
Willem-Alexander left Afghanistan yesterday afternoon after meeting with Afghan president Hamid Karzai. His whirlwind visit was kept secret for security reasons until after his departure.
Meanwhile, the prince’s mother, Queen Beatrix, has been on a three-day state visit to Slovakia.

The 37-year-old will eat one of the dogs - famous for being Queen Elizabeth’s favourite pets - on a live radio show next week in protest at the royals’ treatment of animals.
McGowan told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: ‘I’m raising awareness at the inability of the RSPCA to prosecute Prince Philip and his friends for shooting a fox this year. It was left to fight for life for five minutes then beaten to death.’ The pedigree dog, which died at a breeding farm last week, will be eaten on London’s 104.4 Resonance FM on May 29.
An RSPCA spokeswoman said: ‘If the dog’s dead he’s free to eat it.
‘But we did look at the incident with Prince Philip and decided no offence was committed. I’d suggest Mr McGowan try a private prosecution.’ McGowan, of Peckham, south London, has previously eaten a swan during a performance art show. An old English law states that all swans belong to the queen and it is illegal to kill them.
The controversial artist’s previous stunts include pushing a peanut to Downing Street using only his nose while crawling on all fours, and sitting in a bath of beans in protest against tuition fees.

The case was adjourned until June 8, to allow the legal teams time to discuss a possible agreement.
As he left court, Michael Lohan said: ‘I just want to resolve this, and I wish for the best for the children, and for Dina and myself.’ Dina declined to comment on the case, but said of Lindsay’s latest film ‘Georgia Rule’, ‘The movie was amazing. You should see it’.

Oprah said it would have been a ‘nice gesture’ if her dad had told her in advance about the publishing deal, because they ‘have a good relationship’.
Vernon’s project is the third book about her Oprah, 53, has been threatened with recently. Earlier this month, an Illinois court dismissed extortion charges after Keifer Bonvillain requested $1.5 million from Oprah claiming he had ‘embarrassing information’ destined for a book.
And Kitty Kelley is also working on a biography about the star.
Oprah said: ‘I’m not cooperating with it, but if she wants to write a book, fine. This is America. I’m not discouraging it or encouraging it.’

The musician has signed a deal to appear at Hollywood Roosevelt hotel’s Blossom Room for seven consecutive Fridays from June 15.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: ‘He is getting paid $3 million for the concerts - $1.5 million is coming from a clothing company, cell phone company Verizon Wireless is chalking up $750,000, and the rest is covered by the hotel. Prince will also get comped rooms, food and beverages.’ A representative for Prince is yet to comment on whether the ‘Purple Rain’ singer has agreed to perform at the nightspot.
Meanwhile, Prince will reportedly sleep in a tent during his upcoming London tour.
The diminutive singer has requested a luxurious camping area to be built inside London concert venue The 02 arena.
A source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: ‘Prince wanted to stay very close to his concert venues so he thought a marquee-style living space would be perfect and very comfortable. It really will be the most extravagant tent that has ever been built.
‘It will have luxury bathrooms, kitchens and huge living areas as well as living facilities for staff.’ Prince’s first seven London concerts at The 02 sold out in just 20 minutes last week.
He will kick-off his 21-date extravaganza on August 1, and it will reportedly be the last time Prince will ever perform his greatest hits.

The comic actor and his wife Kirsten were thrilled to welcome their first daughter Evan Jane Heder into the world.
A representative for the star confirmed Evan was ’safe and sound and healthy’, but refused to reveal the birth date or any other details.
The couple - who met as students at Utah’s Brigham Young University and married in 2002 - announced they were expecting their first child last September.
Heder, 29, shot to fame as lovable dork Napoleon Dynamite in the cult 2004 movie of the same name.
He has since starred in romantic comedy ‘Just Like Heaven’ with Reese Witherspoon, baseball hit ‘The Benchwarmers’ and ‘School for Scoundrels’ with Billy Bob Thornton.

The rapper-and-actress – real name Eve Jeffers – was formally charged with DUI and driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher in relation to her arrest last month.
She faces a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and six months in jail if found guilty.
Eve did not appear in the Los Angeles court, her attorney entered the plea on her behalf.
A court hearing was set for June 28. The 28-year-old allegedly crashed her gold Maserati into Hollywood Boulevard’s central reservation in the early hours of the morning on April 26.
The ‘XXX’ star had two passengers in the vehicle at the time.
Eve was visited in jail by Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn, who was seen leaving the police station in a taxi at 4am.
A police source said: ‘He came to see how Eve was doing.’
