COURT WATCHES VIDEO OF SPECTOR ‘CONFESSION’ WITNESS
LATEST: The PHIL SPECTOR murder trial has been played a videotape of the music producer’s Brazilian chauffeur telling police he heard his boss say, "I think I killed somebody." The Los Angeles Superior Court hearing yesterday (22May07) saw footage of Adriano De Souza recounting how Spector spoke to him while holding a gun near the body of Lana Clarkson, five hours after the actress died from a fatal gun shot.
During the tape, De Souza is asked whether he is sure he definitely heard Spector say, "I think I killed somebody." After a brief hesitation, the chauffeur, whose first language is Portuguese, replies, "I think so. I think so. I’m not sure. It’s my English." In court yesterday, De Souza explained his "not sure" comment: "Yes, I said that. I told him that because I thought he does not understand what I said." On Monday (21May07), De Souza denied the suggestion he might have heard Spector say, "I think somebody was killed." Last week (ends18May07), the driver testified he heard a loud "pow" before Spector emerged from a side entrance, holding a gun and covered in blood. It was then Spector is alleged to have said, "I think I killed somebody." Spector has pleaded not guilty to shooting Clarkson dead at his home on 3 February 2003 and claims she committed suicide.
The trial continues.
