A drunk Austrian motorist woke to find himself surrounded by police after failing to realise he had crashed his car.
Michael Thom, 36, was driving to Vienna when he ploughed into a motorway crash barrier.
He continued on his journey before stopping at a petrol station and falling asleep.
Thom was later woken by police who had been alerted by concerned motorists.
A police spokesman said: "He was so drunk he did not even realise that he had crashed. He was very surprised when he saw the state of his car." Thom was three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

A British woman was horrified to find a dead newt in her supermarket salad.
Susan Williams, 37, from Hertfordshire, was tucking into her lunch when she bit on a nine-centimetre salamander.
She said: "It was absolutely horrible. I’ll never forget it as long as I live. I took a mouthful, there was an awful crunch and I spat it out. I looked down and saw it was newt." Susan isn’t the only British shopper to discover something slimy in her salad recently.
Jessanne De’Ath, 23, from Cambridgeshire, found a rare brown natterjack toad hopping around in her leafy lunch last week.

The summer’s (07) two-day Virgin Festival in Baltimore, Maryland is all about big reunions - THE POLICE will join the SMASHING PUMPKINS as headliners.
The Police have just announced they’ll close the first night of the festival (04Aug07), while the Smashing Pumpkins have already announced they’ll perform on the following night.
Amy Winehouse, Modest Mouse, Revolver and the reformed Bad Brains are also on the bill.
The Police’s US summer tour dates all sold out in near-record time. The group are also planning a series of dates in Europe.

LATEST: BO DIDDLEY’s manager is hoping music will help the I’M A MAN singer/songwriter recover after suffering a stroke.
The 78-year-old rock ‘n’ roller was admitted to a hospital in Nebraska on Sunday (13May07) after showing signs of disorientation following a concert at Harrah’s Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Diddley has started walking around the intensive-care unit at Creighton University Medical Center, but his speech remains impaired.
The guitarist’s manager, Margo Lewis, says, "We’re going to get a guitar for him and put it in his lap and let him entertain people here. People think that would be good therapy for him."

LATEST: EVANESCENCE singer AMY LEE has confirmed she’s a married woman in a new posting on the band’s website.
Reports earlier this month (May07) suggested the rocker had exchanged vows with her therapist fiance Josh Hartzler, and now Lee is gushing about her new name and happiness.
She writes, "I am now officially Mrs. Amy Hartzler! Josh and I are married, and it is the most incredible thing to happen in my life so far." Lee also addresses reports she fired drummer Rocky Gray and guitarist John LeCompt, explaining that LeCompt, in particular, took advantage of the fact the singer was on honeymoon to attack her on his MySpace.com blog.
The singer states, "When I said that John and Rocky both made it clear they were ready to move on, I meant it. They were very vocal about the fact that they didn’t really care about Evanescence at all and just stayed around for the money.
"I knowingly let this negative energy grow within my band for a very long time because I was afraid of the appearance of falling apart when in reality trying to hold on to these guys is what was holding us back.
"I treated both John and Rocky with nothing but kindness and respect, and I got nothing but jealousy and resentment in return." Lee adds, "One little false fact that’s been bugging me in the press about this - Rocky didn’t quit. He never talked to me or our management at all… but he did tell most of the crew and the rest of the band that he planned to quit during the two weeks off after our shows in South Africa, during which I was getting married and would have no time to replace him.
"Fortunately, many of those people care about this project and came and warned me, so we were able to replace him in time to continue the tour as scheduled." LeCompt and Gray have since been replaced by Dark New Day stars Will Hunt and Troy McLawhorn.

English singer AMY WINEHOUSE has apologised to SIR ELTON JOHN for cancelling one of her London gigs earlier this year (07), after the veteran rocker bought a ticket for the axed show.
John and partner David Furnish bought tickets for the 8 March (07) concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire and were dismayed when Winehouse pulled the plug at the last minute, citing "unforeseen circumstances".
Winehouse admits she was stunned when John’s publicist issued a statement expressing the Rocket Man’s disappointment.
She says, "Sorry about that (Elton). There’ll be a next time."

LATEST: MICHAEL JACKSON will testify in a Las Vegas court today (18May07) in a bid to stop a planned charity auction of his belongings going ahead.
The Thriller star and his family are suing bosses at Universal Express, who are planning to hold the Jackson Family Memorabilia Auction later this month (30-31May07) in Nevada’s Sin City.
The singer wants to halt the auction, claiming he is the rightful owner of the goods, and will appear in the Clark County Courthouse, Nevada, via video link to give evidence. Florida businessman Richard Altomare, who bought the artifacts from a former Jackson business associate as part of a bankruptcy case, is reportedly threatening to put embarrassing items - including portraits of naked kids and sex toys - in the auction.
Altomare expects the memorabilia to collect $100 million (£50 million).

LATEST: MADONNA has released her new song HEY YOU online - and the first million downloads are free.
The Material Girl - who is headlining the London leg of this summer’s (07) Live Earth series of concerts - has teamed up with hip-hop star Pharrell Williams for the ballad, in a bid to raise awareness about the effects of climate change.
But the duet doesn’t specifically talk about global warming - instead the lyrics refer to loving and saving each other.

Hollywood legends ROBERT DE NIRO and AL PACINO are set to team up on the big screen in a new serial killer movie.
The two actors - who have three Academy Awards and 14 Oscar nominations between them - appeared together briefly in The Godfather Part II and Heat, but only shared the screen fleetingly.
Righteous Kill, written by Russell Gewirtz and directed by John Avnet, will pair them up as police investigators hunting a serial killer.
Co-producer Avi Lerner says, "This is an event in world history. They were in two scenes in Heat. In this movie, they are in the whole thing together." Filming is set to begin in Connecticut in August (07).

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has found himself at the centre of a paternity investigation over claims he faked a DNA test more than 20 years ago. Bettina Hubers, 46, claims the former Beatle is her biological father following an affair with her mother Erica while the band were playing in Hamburg, Germany in the early 1960s.
The music legend has denied paternity, claiming to have taken a DNA test proving so in 1983.
But Hubers is now accusing McCartney of "faking" the test by sending a body double to give a blood sample.
She says, "The signature on the documents he signed at the time was false. We found that the signature is from a right-handed person and he is not. "I want a new paternity test. It is my right. It has taken so long because we have been fighting to find out the truth." A spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office in Berlin confirmed they are investigating a paternity case involving McCartney.
If prosecutors find there is a case to answer, the singer could be arrested for fraud the next time he visits Germany.

Pop star JESSICA SIMPSON has refuted claims she "used" a children’s charity to gain exposure.
The singer - who has supported the facial deformities charity for a decade failed to attend the Operation Smile benefit on 12 May (07) sparking rumours she had dumped them.
A source tells the New York Post, "She’s turned her back on them.
"She got a lot of good publicity from the charity but refused to let pictures of her be in the commemorative book and hasn’t done anything with them in a year." But a representative for the singer-turned-actress denied the allegations, claiming she was in Germany being honoured at the UNESCO Gala to Benefit Children in Need, "Partly for her work with Operation Smile." She adds, "Jess was one of four honorees for her philanthropic work. She sang two songs, and the event raised about $3 million to build schools all over the world."

JAKE GYLLENHAAL has hailed ROBERT DOWNEY JR. as a "genius" and compares working with the actor to playing jazz.
The pair worked together on new movie Zodiac - a film based on a true story in which Gyllenhaal plays Robert Graysmith, a cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle, who embarks on a quest to identify a 1960s serial killer.
And the Brokeback Mountain star was constantly in awe of Downey Jr.’s passion for his art.

Frasier star KELSEY GRAMMER is set to make a comedy comeback as a news anchor in a new American sitcom.
The actor, who played psychiatrist Doctor Frasier Crane for 22 years in both Cheers and Frasier, will star as a local news presenter trying to rebuild his career in the Fox TV show Back To You.
He will star alongside Everybody Loves Raymond actress Patricia Heaton in the comedy due to be screened in 2008.

LATEST: Movie mogul HARVEY WEINSTEIN has confirmed reports he is protecting MICHAEL MOORE’s latest movie SICKO from U.S. authorities.
The Oscar-winner’s latest documentary is an expose on the U.S. health care system and allegedly features a segment where Moore takes a group of former Ground Zero relief workers on a trip to Cuba.
Communist Cuba is under a trade embargo from the U.S. and most Americans are banned from travelling to the Caribbean island.
Moore is currently under investigation by The Treasury Department’s Office Of Foreign Assets Control for allegedly violating the country’s trade embargo.
Weinstein, whose firm The Weinstein Company is producing Sicko, says the film is being kept out of the US until its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday (19May07).
Sarah Levanson-Rothman, spokeswoman for The Weinstein Co, says, "The film has been placed in a secret location outside the country." Weinstein says, "We are doing everything in our power to ensure that it premieres in its entirety on Saturday night in Cannes." Moore has recently written to the Treasury, accusing U.S. President George W.

Bollywood star SANJAY DUTT failed to appear in an Indian court today (18May07) to answer charges of weapons possession, after his lawyer claimed the actor was "too ill" to attend.
Dutt, 47, has been convicted for the illegal possession of arms in relation to the 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai, and was due to be sentenced along with 100 other offenders involved in the blasts.
Talking to press before the trial, Dutt’s lawyer Farhana Shah said, "He is suffering from high fever and vomiting and we will be informing the court that he will be unable to appear before it on account of illness." He has been ordered to return to the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court in Mumbai on Monday (21May07).

Cult teen drama VERONICA MARS has been cancelled after three years.
The show, which starred Kristen Bell as the teenage detective, started on US TV network UPN in 2004 before moving on to CW in 2006.
However, the programme’s producers confirmed on Thursday (17May07) the last episode will be broadcast in the U.S. on Tuesday (22May07).
Dawn Ostroff, entertainment president for the CW told TVGuide.com that while the show was over, the network is looking at working with Bell again.
She says, "Veronica Mars is over. We’re talking about something else. I don’t know if it’s going to be anything. I’m being honest with you. It could come back in some form, but I don’t know what form that would be."

LATEST: One of the Ground Zero workers who MICHAEL MOORE took to Cuba for his latest movie SICKO, has defended the filmmaker, declaring Cuban doctors gave him better medical attention that he received in his native America.
Disabled emergency medical technician John Graham spent several months assisting in the huge clean-up operation of lower Manhattan following the September 11th (01) attacks.
Like many other Ground Zero workers, Graham, 45, has suffered from a variety of illnesses since his stint and is struggling to afford expensive medical treatment in the U.S.
When Moore offered him the chance to seek medical treatment in Communist Cuba, Graham accepted and spent five days in a hospital in the capital Havana.
Moore is currently under investigation by The Treasury Department’s Office Of Foreign Assets Control for allegedly violating the country’s trade embargo with Cuba by travelling to the Caribbean island.
Graham tells the New York Daily News, "See the movie, because everyone else is wrong. There were no promises of a cure; there were promises of doctors that are willing to do tests that would cost thousands of dollars in the United States." Graham said not only was he given more effective medicine for his ailments, but he was also diagnosed with digestive problems, of which he had no prior knowledge.
