The king arrived in Copenhagen on a Swedish naval ship yesterday morning (09.05.07), accompanied by his wife Queen Silvia and oldest daughter Crown Princess Victoria.
Cannons were fired from a battery in the harbour to salute their visit.
Denmark’s Royal Family, headed by Carl Gustaf’s cousin Queen Margrethe, greeted the visitors together with representatives from Denmark’s government.
The Swedish King and Danish Queen then inspected the Royal Life Guard, who were wearing their traditional read coats and bearskin hats.
Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary, who recently gave birth to her second child, was not present at the welcome ceremony, but met the Swedish royals later in the day at Fredensborg Palace.
Although the Swedish royals have made several visits to their Scandinavian neighbours it was King Carl Gustaf’s first state visit to Denmark for more than 32 years.
The trip is designed to highlight cooperation between the two countries, particularly between the Danish capital and the Skåne region of southern Sweden.
The Swedish royals will visit a number of Danish companies, Christiansborg Castle and attend the Stravinsky ballet ‘Le Sacre de Printemps’ at the Copenhagen Opera House during their three-day trip.
