SPIDER-MAN 3 HAS A SMASHING TIME AT THE US BOX OFFICE
Your friendly neighbourhood SPIDER-MAN has stunned the US box office with an amazing $148 million (£74 million) opening weekend take.
After smashing single-day box office records around the world on Friday (04May07) - with a combined $104 million (£52 million) - the film has now become the biggest release ever in America.
And the massive weekend haul betters the previous record, set by last summer’s (06) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, by almost $13 million (£6.5 million).
The second Spider-Man sequel has now taken in $375 million (£187.5 million) globally in just a matter of days. The film debuted in Japan at the beginning of last week and opened throughout the rest of the world on Thursday (03May07) and Friday (04May07).
That means the film has already grossed almost $120 million (£60 million) more than it cost to make.
The remainder of the box office top 10 was a joke compared to Spider-Man’s feat - the other nine films made a combined $26 million (£13 million).
Former top film Disturbia slipped to number two with a $5.7 million (£2.85 million) weekend take, while Drew Barrymore learned not to compete with Spider-Man the hard way - her new film, Lucky You, was a huge flop, taking in just $2.5 million (£1.25 million) to debut at number six.
