FAMILY MARKS BROWN’S BIRTHDAY
JAMES BROWN’s family marked the late Godfather Of Soul’s 74th birthday yesterday (03May07) with an attack on the music industry.
Family and friends of the legendary singer gathered at a private ceremony at the Apollo Theater, New York, before joining a rally led by Reverend Al Sharpton through Manhattan in protest over the "music business’ racist and sexist language".
Brown’s daughter Deanna Brown Thomas addressed the congregation at the ceremony, demanding, "How did we get from ‘Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud,’ to where we are today?" Her brother Daryl, who is lead guitarist with long-running backing band the Soul Generals, echoed her sentiment, adding, "We got to start taking care of our own people, we have to be accountable to our own people." Brown died of heart failure in December (06) while in hospital with pneumonia.
