Smoking saviour

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:29 pm

A US woman says smoking saved her life.
Brenda Comers, from Rock Hill, South Carolina, had just finished cleaning the dishes when she stepped out for a cigarette.
While she was smoking outside her house, an 80ft oak tree crashed through the roof and landed across the sink where she had been standing just seconds before.
Comers told her husband: "Honey, I know you fuss at me for smoking. But today it saved my life." The tree - which was sent crashing by strong winds - also narrowly missed Comer’s daughter, who was watching TV at the other end of the house when the tree fell.

Mobile phones were turned off across Afghanistan after a rumour spread that calls from strange numbers were unleashing a deadly virus.
Taxi drive Mar was one of the first to switch off his cell phone.
He said: "If you get a phone call from a strange number, if you hit OK, blood will come from your nose and ears, and you will die." The country’s mobile phone service providers were inundated with calls from terrified customers.
The Afghan ministry of health insisted there have been no reports of people answering their phones and then bleeding from the nose.

  • Licence to treat

A British ice-cream parlour has been forced to get a drinks licence - to sell rum and raisin flavoured treats.
Owner Paul Taylor, 52, from Weymouth, Dorset, has also been told he can’t sell the coronets to anyone under 18 because they have been made with real rum.
He said: "It’s barmy. You’d need to eat 25 tubs to reach the drink-drive limit." The rum and raisin ice-cream was deemed to have an alcohol content of two per cent - four times over the legal limit.

A former UK bus driver wants his ashes spread on the roads where he worked.
Joe Harvey, 96, from Tipton, West Midlands, wants to do his bit for road safety when he dies - by mixing his ashes with grit and having them spread on the icy spot where his bus came to a standstill 60 years ago.
He said: "I want to be remembered as the man who gave his all to keep the wheels turning. I want my ashes to go in that old grit bin to help keep the buses running in the future.
"It was a great asset and I’ve shovelled loads of grit from that bin to keep the buses moving." Joe spent 40 years working on the buses. He started out as a conductor, before being promoted to driver and inspector. He retired in 1972.

A Chinese man who hid his life saving in a rubbish bin forgot it was there and threw it out.
Mr Cui put 49,000 yuan (£3,200) in the kitchen bin before he and his wife went away on a business trip.
But on his return to Qingdao city he forgot about the money and put the rubbish out for collection.
Cui said: "We looked around our home and finally decided to hide the money in the garbage bin, where we believed it was safest from burglary.
"I threw away the garbage the day after I came home, since the bin was full." Two days later he remembered the cash, but it was too late.
He said: "Our last hope was the city garbage treatment centre, but the landfill was so vast that we knew our money was lost forever."

  • Sneaky snake sign

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:29 pm

Austrian authorities have put up fake roadside snake warning signs - to deter motorists from urinating by the motorway.
The signs read ‘Beware, mortal danger. Snakes’ alongside a picture of cobra.
Manager of a motorway restaurant Franz Perder said: "People were fed up with the smell of urine in the car parks, even though the toilets are free.
"We tried other signs but they were useless. These signs though have really worked. You see men coming up to bushes, getting ready to have a pee and then quickly zipping up their trousers again when they see the signs." "Of course there are no snakes but they don’t know that. The warnings have worked really well." Officials say the worst culprits are East Europeans so the signs are printed in Polish and Czech as well as English and German.

A trainee plumber is believed to have accidentally burned down a £5 million waterside mansion on his first day at work.
More than 60 firefighters were called to Devon’s Kittery Court - owned by Andrew Brownsword, famous for his Forever Friends range of greeting cards - when it caught fire while plumbing work was being carried out.
Fire fighter John Howes said: "The fire is believed to have been started by a 17-year-old plumber on an apprenticeship.
"It appears at this stage that this was an unfortunate plumber who was soldering in the roof space of a large building, which was undergoing total renovation. He was very upset".
One neighbour said: "I heard it was started by a teenager on his first day.
You have to feel sorry for the poor lad. He must feel terrible."

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:29 pm

Residents in Prague launched a protest against plans to build a monument to Sigmund Freud, insisting they would prefer a goat statue.
The proposed memorial was to be erected in the city’s Goat Square where there have been no goats for hundreds of years, but local people felt only a goat would be appropriate for the area.
Spokesman for protest group ‘The Friends of the Goat’ Stanislav Penc said: "A Freud monument can be erected anywhere in the Czech Republic, a goat monument only on Goat Square." Though the famous psychiatrist was born in the Czech Republic plans to build a statue of him have now been scrapped and a goat statue will be built instead.

Passengers travelling to London were outraged after their flight was delayed for 13 hours because the pilot was tired.
Customers onboard a British Airways flight from New Delhi were asked to leave the plane after the sleepy pilot refused to fly.
It was reported the pilot had a restless nights’ sleep because the hotel he stayed in was too noisy.
Passengers were sent to hotels nearby the airport and told to wait until the pilot had caught up with his sleep.
A British Airways spokeswoman said: "The crew hadn’t had enough rest, the entire crew had a disturbed night."

"We’re happy where we are. We’re happy and that’s it." The couple travelled for almost seven days in Douglas Guldeniz’s yellow Ford SUV.

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:29 pm

The world’s biggest joint spacehop has been held in Britain.
Six hundred people on spacehoppers bounced together for a minute on London’s Millennium Bridge, which itself made headlines for its wobbly structure when it was first built.
An event spokesperson said: "The bridge was pretty bouncy under all those people. I think we thoroughly tested it." An adjudicator from Guinness World Records was present to witness the event and have confirmed it is a new world record.
The previous record for the biggest simultaneous bounce was set in 2003 by pupils and parents at Bath’s St Stephen’s School.

A US astronaut has taken part in the Boston Marathon from space.
Sunita Williams harnessed herself to a treadmill and began running at the same time as the other marathon entrants while her space ship orbited 210 miles above the earth and at 17,500 mph.
The 41-year-old ran with her registration number 14,000 taped to the treadmill and two laptop computers on either side showing live feed of the marathon on Earth and the position of the space station in orbit.
Over an hour into the race Williams radioed mission control to say: "It’s coming up on 9.5 miles now and it looks like we’ve gone around the world.
    Nice statistic."

  • Wasted wild flowers

Posted in: Bizzare Stories — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:29 pm

A field of rare wild flowers in Britain have been mown by council gardeners who mistook it for wasteland.
Volunteers in Malmesbury, Wiltshire - who planted the hundreds of snake’s head fritillary bulbs - spent seven months tending them and claim the area was clearly marked.
Deputy Mayor John Lawton said: "I am incandescent with rage." The unusual flowers, which rarely grow wild in Britain, were in bloom when the local council sent mowers to clear the half-acre picnic site.
North Wiltshire council have apologised and said they did not know the wild flower plantation existed.

A German burglar who broke into a sports club was caught when he turned on the floodlights.
Johann Stark, 46, could not see anything when he entered the Aachen club at 3am so reached for the first switch - lighting the football pitch and also turning on the sprinkler system.
A police spokesman said: "He had no torch and turned on the first light switch that he could find, the switch to the floodlights of the club’s football pitch." Police were called by the groundsman - who lives nearby - after he saw the floodlights go on.

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 4:22 pm

Since leaving rehab the ‘Toxic’ singer has been attending regular dance sessions, and the pounds are dropping off her.
A source said: ‘After all the negative stuff, she’s getting back to her ‘fighting weight’.’ Britney’s representative denied rumours the singer has had liposuction, insisting her weight loss is completely natural.
They said: ‘She’s working out, eating right and enjoying life.’ Robert Baker of North Hollywood’s Millennium Dance Complex, which Britney has been visiting frequently, said: ‘She’s got an amazing metabolism. When she puts her mind to it, she can transform pretty easily.’ Britney put her musical career on hold, and began piling on the pounds, after she gave birth to 19-month-old Sean Preston. Soon after having Sean her first child, she quickly fell pregnant again with seven-month-old Jayden James, her second baby with estranged husband Kevin Federline.
Britney checked into Promises rehab centre after months of partying, which culminated in her shaving off her hair, and she is now focusing on getting her life and career back on track.
