A letter written by Britain’s Mary Queen of Scots has been sold on eBay for £1,636.
The note, dating from December 15, 1557, was put on the popular internet auction site by a Belgium-based vendor. After a four-bid battle, the epistle was sold to a US buyer. Prior to the auction, the letter had previously been unknown. The queen wrote the letter when she was 15 years old in Edinburgh - known as ‘Ediburg’ at the time.
The note was addressed to Viglius de Zuichen, President of the Privy Council. Though the royal usually wrote in French, this letter was written in Latin, and signed ‘Tue virtutis Amica’ (your virtuous friend) Mary R. The text is in copperplate and the letter bears the queen’s seal. Mary - one of Scotland’s most famous monarchs in history - died aged 44 in 1587. She was publicly beheaded for treason after allegedly sanctioning the attempted assassination of England’s Queen Elizabeth. Mary’s tragic life - which was marred by heartache, violence and religious discord - has earned her eminence in her death.
