LATEST: Bollywood actress SHILPA SHETTY has defended actor RICHARD GERE after his public show of affection sparked protests in India.
The Pretty Woman star swept the popular Bollywood actress into his arms and kissed her several times during an AIDS-awareness event last weekend (15Apr07).
The action has outraged Indians, who feel Gere went too far in a country where such public displays of affection are largely taboo.
Angry crowds burned effigies of Gere during demonstrations last Monday (16Apr07) after photographs of him embracing and kissing Shetty appeared on the front pages of India’s leading national newspapers.
But Shetty has defended Gere, saying, "What he did was very sweet. It was all in good humour. He especially told me to tell the media that he didn’t want to hurt any Indian sensibilities." And she admits the actor has apologised "profusely" to her following the kiss.

Former BAYWATCH star PAMELA ANDERSON has laughed off unflattering photographs from her Hawaiian beach break, claiming they prove she has not had Botox.
The actress has been criticised recently for looking unappealing on her vacation with ex-husband Tommy Lee Jones and their children.
But Anderson shrugged off reports, telling The Scoop she rarely looks in a mirror before she goes out.
She says, "I’ve just been sent some pics from Hawaii. I have to laugh, well at least the world knows I don’t get Botox.

Hollywood actor JOHN TRAVOLTA has boasted he is as famous as ELVIS PRESLEY and MARILYN MONROE.
The Pulp Fiction star insists he is as iconic as Presley and Monroe but claims his belief in controversial religion Scientology keeps his feet on the ground.

An aluminium saucepan lid signed by JOHN LENNON and YOKO ONO is expected to fetch £1,200 ($2,340) at an auction in London.
The musical duo signed the lid in felt tip pen at the Institute of Culinary Arts in London in September 1969, where their films were being screened.
The listing for the sale reads, "This lid was obtained on September 10, 1969 at the Institute of Culinary Arts in London where… the couple were doing a ‘Bag-In’ on stage.

Canadian filmmaker DEEPA MEHTA has denied he stole the credit for Oscar-nominated film WATER from his "dear friend" ANURAG KASHYAP.
Kashyap believes he was not given enough praise for translating the Hindi dialogue and insists making the film was "a terrible experience".
But Mehta is shocked at the accusations as he thought they were good friends.
He says, "Why did Kashyap speak like this? He’s such a dear friend with a great mind. I truly admire him. And yes, his contribution to Water is invaluable.
"It was Kashyap who used his skills with the Hindi language to bring my characters to life. Not once did he tell me or let me feel that he was having a terrible time. We seemed to get along so well."

Chinese actor CHOW YUN-FAT has been criticised for pulling out of historical epic RED CLIFF after movie bosses reportedly refused his ‘demands’ Yun-Fat was expected to start filming on the big budget movie last week (13Apr07), but the star walked from the set claiming he didn’t have time to learn his scripts.
But Terence Chang, who is co-producing the movie with director John Woo, claims the actor received the script last year and he walked because bosses opposed 73 clauses in Chow’s contract.

The girlfriend of American rapper DARNELL ‘BELO’ SMITH has been convicted of obstructing the course of justice and bribing a witness involved in her boyfriend’s murder trial.
Smith, a member of the Chicago rap group Do Or Die, stands accused of murder after shooting a man during a gang-related fight in November 2002.
And his girlfriend Felicia Hamilton now faces up to three years behind bars after paying a witness $1,000 (£513) to lie in court. She was found guilty after the witness wore a wire to provide evidence for police, reports AllHipHop.com.
Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Karen Kerbis says, "We see recants every day in courtrooms. We become so immune to it." Smith’s trial is set to begin on 9 July (07).

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT refuses to blame the man who raped him as a teenager, insisting the experience stopped him from leading an hedonistic life.
The singer/songwriter was attacked by a man he picked up in a bar in London’s Hyde Park at the tender age of 14. He claims he survived the ordeal by pretending to have an epileptic fit.
But the 33-year-old insists the experience saved his life because it stopped him from hanging out in bars.
He says, "I actually consider that experience somewhat sensical and just. It gave me a chance to get my head out of that area and steered me in a different direction."

The man US authorities have publicly named as a suspect in the fatal shooting of JAM MASTER JAY has denied any involvement in the murder, accusing cops of trying to pin "all the blood in rap" on him.
Federal authorities in the US believe Ronald ‘Tinard’ Washington is one of two men responsible for the death of the Run D.M.C. founder, born Jason Mizell, who was gunned down in his studio in Queens, New York, on 30 October, 2002.
Washington was named as a suspect after his ex-girlfriend Daynia McDonald claimed he had confessed his involvement in the 2002 shooting to her. He is also said to have admitted taking part in the 1995 murder of Randy ‘Stretch’ Walker, a close associate of the late rapper, Tupac Shakur. He was implicated in Mizell’s murder in a letter by authorities to the judge presiding over his recent (Apr07) trial for armed robbery in Brooklyn, New York.
Prosecutors Sean Haran and Adam Abensohn wrote to Judge Nina Gershon, alleging Washington and an unnamed associate entered the producer’s studio and "pointed his gun at those present, ordered them on the ground and provided cover for his associate to shoot and kill Jason Mizell." But Washington, who was convicted on 5 April (07) for his role in six armed robberies in November 2002, has protested his innocence in the killings and says his ex-girlfriend is "making up lies" in her bid to avoid deportation.
He says, They want to blame me for all the blood in rap. They are trying to pen me up for these murders.
"It’s all lies. (McDonald’s) telling them that I was mad at Jay because he was doing better than I am, that I killed Stretch because he owed me something and I wanted it. She is making up lies because they threatened to deport her."

The queen and her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, are due to make a two-day visit to Virginia in May as part of their first official tour of the US in 16 years.
The royal couple will visit the state on May 3 and 4 to mark the 400th anniversary of the English settlement at Jamestown.
British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett also extended her condolences to the families of the murdered students. Speaking at the United Nations in New York, she said: ‘Can I first say how appalled everyone is by the terrible news from Virginia. ‘Our deepest sympathy and our condolences of course go to that community and to all of those whose families are directly affected.’ The massacre took place early on Monday morning at Blacksburg’s Virginia Tech university. The gunman - armed with what has been described as an ‘ungodly amount’ of ammunition - is believed to have visited his girlfriend at her halls of residence and found her with another man.
During two separate rampages - just two hours apart - he shot 32 people and injured 29 others, before turning the gun on himself.
The incident has claimed more lives than any other US school shooting tragedy.

It was recently reported that Joachim, 37, planned to announce his engagement to Marie Cavallier.
Speculation grew after the prince took his girlfriend to Marselisborg Castle, near Aarhus, to meet his parents over the Easter holiday.
Joachim was previously married to Hong Kong-born Alexandra Manley but they divorced in 2005.
The prince shares custody of his two sons, Nikolai, six, and Felix, four, with their mother Alexandra.

The note was addressed to Viglius de Zuichen, President of the Privy Council. Though the royal usually wrote in French, this letter was written in Latin, and signed ‘Tue virtutis Amica’ (your virtuous friend) Mary R. The text is in copperplate and the letter bears the queen’s seal. Mary - one of Scotland’s most famous monarchs in history - died aged 44 in 1587. She was publicly beheaded for treason after allegedly sanctioning the attempted assassination of England’s Queen Elizabeth. Mary’s tragic life - which was marred by heartache, violence and religious discord - has earned her eminence in her death.
