The queen will watch the famous Louisville horserace on May 5 and caterers are flying in Earl Grey teas from around the world after Buckingham Palace hinted it is her favourite afternoon drink.
Gil Logan, chef at Levy Restaurants at the Churchill Downs racecourse, has enlisted the help of Mark Nethery, master roaster at john conti Coffee Co., in his search for the best cup.
They have ordered half a dozen Earl Grey teas from China, India and Ceylon and the brew with the ‘most rounded flavour without being overpowered by the oil of bergamot’ will be served to the royal guest.
Logan told Louisville’s Courier Journal newspaper: ‘Basically she wants to come and experience the pageantry that is Derby. She’s not real interested in sticking to her traditions, but I understand it’s also the Queen of England, and if she would like some tea, I’m definitely going to be ready.’ The queen will also be treated to smoked salmon and cucumber tea sandwiches with Boursin cheese and strawberries, scones, crumpets with orange marmalade and shortbread cookies with different coloured chocolate to represent the colours of the jockey’s silks.
The queen - who will attend the race with her husband Prince Philip - will be the first sitting British monarch to attend the Derby.
