Paintings by Denmark’s Queen Margrethe have fetched more than seven times the estimated bid price at auction.

The royal’s abstract watercolours were bought for 82,000 kroner - the equivalent to almost £7,500 or $14,800 - smashing all expectations.
Lennart Gottlieb of auction house Lauritz.com told Dutch reporters: ‘We had expected that they would generate a high price. Only a few items by the queen are auctioned and it has been difficult to estimate the market price.’ The queen, 66, who has reigned since 1972, presented the artworks to the auction house as a gift. Margrethe - who suffers from arthritis - is a keen accomplished artist and also a costume designer.
Lauritz.com did not disclose details of the winning bidder.
