British rock bands try to copy THE BEATLES, because as a nation they have never got over the Fab Four’s split, according to rocker JOHNNY MARR.
The MODEST MOUSE guitarist was previously co-founder and guitarist of THE SMITHS, fronted by MORRISSEY.
When the band split, he was seen as the catalyst and received bitter abuse from fans, prompting his move to the United States.
Portland-based Marr says, "The English can’t get over the fact that the Beatles split up so they try and make everyone else take their place." "It’s not like that in America and that partly explains why I’m here."

Pop sensation MIKA has fuelled speculation his debut single GRACE KELLY was written about music mogul SIMON COWELL. Mika struggled to get a record deal and was rejected until he was signed in a collaboration deal between Universal Motown and Island. He recently revealed he was snubbed by Cowell, before landing a record deal.
Since then his career has taken off, with a UK number one debut single and debut album LIFE IN CARTOON MOTION.
Since Grace Kelly topped the charts, it has been rumoured the song is a veiled attack on Cowell, with the lyrics "Why don’t you like me, why don’t you like me without making me try?" Mika refused to confirm the rumours, but hints, "He said my songs weren’t very good and I wasn’t a songwriter." A Universal source adds, "No one knows for sure who the track is about; however there has been a rumour for a while it is Simon Cowell." Cowell, on being questioned about the meeting with Mika, says, "Do you know what, I don’t even remember meeting him."

Former BLUR drummer DAVE ROWNTREE will stand in the UK local elections as a Labour candidate next month (MAY07).
Rowntree, who has been a long-standing member of the party, will represent London’s Marylebone constituency in the forthcoming by-election.
He says, "I’m a Westminster resident and in my experience of living here, it all looks lovely - there are hanging baskets everywhere - but you only need to scratch the surface and see that there’s lots of deprivation and a lot of inequality around.
"I think someone needs to do something about it."

Troubled music producer PHIL SPECTOR’s defence team will claim his alleged murder victim LANA CLARKSON was depressed at the time of her death in his Los Angeles mansion.
Spector, 67, is currently awaiting trial for the murder of the 40-year-old actress, who was found dead from a single gunshot to the head in the hall of his home on 3 February 2003. Spector has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In court papers, filed in Los Angeles yesterday (09APR07), Spector’s lawyers claim Clarkson was despondent over the state of her finances and career before her death, and was even contemplating suicide.
His attorneys quoted one of the actress’ emails, dated from late 2002, in which she wrote, "I am truly at the end of this whole deal. I am going to tidy my affairs and chuck it…" Last week (ends06APR07), Deputy District Attorney ALAN JACKSON filed a motion to stop Spector’s legal team from attacking "the character of victim Lana Clarkson by painting her as the kind of person who might kill herself." Jury selection for the trial is expected to resume on Monday (16APR07).

The china ‘Wucai’ piece, made for a Chinese emperor during the Ming dynasty in the late 1500s, went under the hammer at London auction house Sotheby’s.
The antique, decorated with songbirds and trees, is believed to be one of the first examples of imperial porcelain to be brought to English shores. It is thought an English explorer obtained the pot and it was presented to the 16th century queen as a gift for favour.
It sold for £1,079,000 to London-based antique dealer Littleton and Hennessy, bidding on behalf of an overseas collector.
Alastair Gibson of Sotheby’s said: ‘It is a wonderful, exotic and historic piece which would have blown people’s minds.
‘You never saw porcelain in Europe then - it just didn’t exist. Everything was dull and tawdry and people were mainly eating of metal.
‘It symbolises a new age of travel and exploration.’ The queen gave the 10in silver-mounted pot to her chaplain Henry Parry, the Bishop of Worcester, on her deathbed in 1603.
Over the years the piece has passed through several families. In 1976 it became part of the British Rail Pension Fund Collection, before being sold again in 1989.

Details of the planned meeting between the prince and George Adamski - a Polish-American who claimed he had been taken on a tour of the solar system with aliens from Venus - are documented in ‘Flying Saucerers: A Social History Of UFOlogy’.
The introduction was arranged in 1959 by a private secretary to Queen Elizabeth, General Sir Frederick Browning, and ex-RAF pilot Desmond Leslie.
However, the meeting was cancelled at the last minute amid fears that it could pose a risk of embarrassment to the royal family.
Co-author Dr David Clarke said: ‘This alone shows how far these bizarre ideas had penetrated the upper classes and royalty. There’s no doubt from the documentation we have that Prince Philip and his uncle Lord Mountbatten were UFO enthusiasts, and I’m sure Philip would have met Adamski if he felt he could have got away with it.
‘But it looks as if he realised the danger this would place him in - not least the huge potential embarrassment for the royals if it leaked out.’ According to reports, the prince was once a subscriber to Flying Saucer Review magazine and his interest in aliens is well-documented.

The 15th century Gothic chapel is the final resting place of British monarchs Henry VIII, Charles I and George VI.

The Motown legend never reported the theft so when the award appeared on internet auction website eBay the police were unable to intervene, and Stevie was forced to join the bidding war, reports Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.
Stevie, 56, has won a record-breaking 22 solo artist Grammy Awards, but the missing trophy was said to hold special value to him.
Stevie won the 1974 Best Album award for ‘Innervisions’, just months after waking up from a coma following a car crash in 1973. The star regained consciousness after four days but lost his sense of smell.
The award was on offer at California’s Profiles In History auction house and was also carried live on the website for someone who had reportedly bought it in New York last June.

The queen of pop has added her name to a glittering line up of acts for the Wembley event, which already boasts The Black Eyed Peas, Genesis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Razorlight and Duran Duran.
The show is part of a global series of concerts which will take place around the world on July 7 to highlight climate change.
Details of the US concert are set to be announced soon, with cities including Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Sydney and Tokyo also expected to attract an array of stars.
The organisers announced 17 acts for the UK concert, and have promised more will follow.
Tickets will be allocated by a ballot, with fans able to register their interest online for 72 hours from 1200 BST on Friday (13.04.07) before they go on sale next Wednesday (18.04.07). Those lucky enough to bag one of the £55 tickets will also be treated to acts ranging from The Beastie Boys to James Blunt and Snow Patrol.
The concerts aim to set a ‘green example’ for other music events by using measures such as eco-friendly electricity, sustainable lighting and carbon-neutral travel.
Former US Vice-President Al Gore is involved in organising the series of events.
He said: ‘We hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign, giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis.’ All profits will go to organisations including the Alliance for Climate Protection, the Climate Group and Stop Climate Chaos.

Over 1,100 Jackson family items are due to be sold in ‘The Jacksons Auction’ at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock hotel on May 30 and 31, but the ‘Thriller’ singer wants to stop the sale, according to Associated Press.
Michael’s spokeswoman Raymone K. Bain said: ‘Mr. Jackson was not aware and he is extremely upset that his memorabilia was included.’ Guernsey’s auction house said items include Michael Jackson’s gold record for his ‘Thriller’ album, handwritten lyrics for The Jackson Five hit ‘ABC’ and a ‘Victory Tour’ programme signed by the Jacksons.
There is also a test pressing of The Jackson Five’s ‘I Want You Back’, Marlon Jackson’s glitter jacket, Randy Jackson’s futuristic 1984 stage boots and a white fedora believed to be from Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ album music video.
The collection was owned by Florida luggage transportation company Universal Express Inc, which bought it last year from a New Jersey construction company owner.
The former owner, Henry Vaccaro, claimed a warehouse full of Jackson memorabilia during a bankruptcy case.
Michael and his sister Janet sued to stop Vaccaro from taking ownership, but a Los Angeles judge threw Michael’s claim out of court last year.
The status of Janet’s claim is still unclear.

Vinod Nayar has agreed to provide evidence in legal proceedings brought against the newlyweds by Vishnu Khandelwal, a devout Hindu.
It is alleged the couple drank alcohol, wore leather shoes and behaved inappropriately by kissing in front of cameras during the ceremony in Rajasthan last month.
Prosecuting lawyer H M Saraswat said: ‘Vinod contacted me. He wants to disclose some important facts. He told me that when Arun Nayar and Liz Hurley came to the mandap (marriage place), Arun Nayar left his footwear outside but Liz Hurley refused to remove her footwear.
‘Our intention is to prove that the procedures adopted by both the accused for their marriage is against our Hindu rites.’ The couple have been charged at a court in Jodhpur under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code.
If found guilty of a ‘deliberate and malicious act’ against the religion Liz and Arun could face a three-year prison sentence.
Vinod has publicly disowned his son Arun saying he and his wife Joanne, 55, were treated like ’second-class citizens’ at the couple’s wedding celebrations. He has also accused the lovers of ‘blatant and cynical commercialism’, referring to the couple’s £2 million magazine deal with Hello! Vinod’s bitterness towards the newlyweds has infuriated Liz.
