The 72-year-old DEATH WISH director beat the deadly bug he caught while holidaying abroad at Christmas, splurging $1.45 million (£750,000) on seven life-saving operations in the process.
And despite admitting the pain and price took their toll, Winner is adamant his strong personality pulled him through.
He says, "If you suffer adversity you either shoot yourself - and there were times when I would happily have done that - or you see it through. Since I don’t have a gun, that is what I’ve had to do."

American funnyman WILL FERRELL is desperate to work on hit BBC television show EXTRAS because he is a huge fan of its creator and star, RICKY GERVAIS.

British royal PRINCE WILLIAM and his army friends have been accused of ruining an amateur musician’s big break by disrupting his first gig.
Acoustic singer DAN BAKER was shocked when a member of Prince William’s crowd drunkenly approached the stage at Bliss wine bar in Bournemouth, England.
He reportedly told Baker, "Please stop playing these crap songs - the Prince wants dance music." Baker tells British newspaper The Sun, "I was staggered when this drunken man scaled the stage and ran up to me mid-song.
"It was the rudest thing I’ve ever experienced.
"This gig was the pinnacle of my career. I’ve practiced for years in the hope of a change to perform like this."

Hip-hop star DJ DRAMA has defended the mixtape racketeering affair that nearly landed him in jail, insisting the compilations are crucial to today’s music industry.
The star was arrested for selling mix CDs that weren’t labelled with a publisher’s address in January (07). His recording studio was raided for investigation while CDs inside were confiscated.
But T.I.’s official DJ - real name TYREE CINQUE SIMMONS - insists his hoard of tapes was justified.
He says, "People need to realise how important mixtapes are to hip-hop and the music business. Just look at the careers of people like 50 CENT, YOUNG JEEZY, DJ CLUE and JAY-Z. There are people in very powerful industry positions that owe a lot to mixtapes." Simmons was released after posting bail and is currently preparing his legal defence.

LATEST: A London pub landlord has caved into protests from fans of THE KINKS to keep iconic band memorabilia at the establishment.
Brothers RAY and DAVE DAVIES pleaded with the new owner of The Clissold Arms not to remove photos, plaques and records from the venue - where they played their first gig in 1963 - to make room for an upmarket eaterie.
Retaining the shrine to the WATERLOO SUNSET rockers attracted the support of ex-BEATLE RINGO STARR, singer MARIANNE FAITHFULL and film director JULIEN TEMPLE, who all signed a petition.
And the campaign seems to have worked. CAROLINE JONES, of the pub’s new developer, says, "We have no intention of removing it." Delighted Dave says, "This is fantastic for our fans. I’ve been getting emails from Japanese people saying they come over and visit the Tower of London and Big Ben then go to (this pub). Bizarre, but it’s sweet."

LATEST: Jailed British rocker GARY GLITTER is eyeing an early release from prison by appealing for amnesty from the president of Vietnam.
Glitter - born PAUL FRANCIS GADD - was convicted of committing obscene acts with children in the country in March 2006 but hopes Vietnam’s Liberation Day celebrations later this month (30APR07) will give him a chance of early freedom.
His lawyer LE THANH KINH says, "My client will certainly seek an amnesty this time but it is still up to the president to decide if he would be released." He added the government amnesty was discretionary but often happened on major national holidays.
The 62-year-old was jailed until November 2008. But a ruling earlier this year (FEB07) will reportedly see the star released three months early in August 2008.

Oscar winner DAME HELEN MIRREN is making a documentary about her Russian ancestry.
The actress - whose real name is ILYENA LYDIA MIRONOVA - and her sister KATE plan to travel to Moscow with a documentary crew to explore their aristocratic roots.
Helen and Kate’s grandfather was a diplomat working for Tsar NICHOLAS II, forced out of Russia during the 1917 revolution and unable to return.
The documentary, to be titled THE JOURNEY, will fulfil a lifetime’s ambition for Mirren.

British police have arrested 10 youths for vandalising the real life train used in the HARRY POTTER movie series.
Windows were smashed during the attack at train’s depot in Lancashire, England on 10 March (07), causing damage estimated at $95,000 (£50,000).
The ten arrested range in age between 12 and 14. They have been released on police bail.

Hollywood star KEVIN COSTNER is suing a music promotion company he claims broke its promise to help him launch a singing career.
In a $8.5 million lawsuit filed at Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday (3APR07), the DANCES WITH WOLVES actor alleges Mahee Worldwide Ventures inc of breach of contract and fraud.
The 52-year-old, who is the lead singer of the KEVIN COSTNER BAND, claims he signed a two-year deal with the firm in January (07) based around his band performing up to five concerts per year. His lawsuit alleges Mahee reneged on the deal.
It reads, "Defendants made numerous promises regarding their capabilities to promote Mr Costner’s music and (their) willingness to pay for the right to do so.
"Instead of following through on their promises, defendants continued to make false promises and ultimately disappeared …"
