The Swedish Royal Family are planning to sue ‘the most hated family in America’.
They are consulting their lawyers over an abusive site set up by the Kansas-based sect of fundamentalist Christians, whose bizarre beliefs recently featured in a BBC documentary with Louis Theroux.
The church set up a ‘God hates Sweden’ website after a Swedish pastor was convicted for inciting hatred against homosexuals two years ago.
The site celebrates the deaths of Swedes and brands King Carl XVI Gustaf ‘King of Sodomite Whores’.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of the church’s founder, said: ‘They say they have human rights in Sweden. You can be any sort of filthy pervert but you cannot preach what the scriptures say.’ Nina Eldh, a spokeswoman for Sweden’s Royal Court, said they were considering taking action under Swedish hate crime laws, but admitted they might have a problem because it was an international website. She told Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper: ‘We have reacted through lawyers saying this is a crime under Swedish law.’ King Carl XVI Gustaf has taken legal action against the media several times, most recently over the internet publication of pictures showing his daughter Princess Madeleine in a revealing dress. The Topeka church is run by founder Fred Phelps and has around 70 members, most of them family. They have become notorious in America over the last 15 years for celebrating the deaths of ’sinners’. They claim US soldiers are dying in Iraq because the country gives rights to homosexuals, and often picket dead soldiers’ funerals with celebratory placards.
