Britain’s Prince Charles insists he flew to Scotland with wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, because he was concerned about her health.
The prince has come under fire from environmentalists for flying from Lyneham to Aberdeen last Friday (30.03.07), rather than travelling by land.
However, sources say the prince took the decision because he wanted his wife - who is recovering from a recent hysterectomy - to travel in the most comfort.
A source told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper: ‘Although Camilla cancelled all her engagements and expected she would have recovered completely by now, she hasn’t really bounced back.
‘Nearly a month after her operation, she is not really feeling herself yet and is still feeling weak.
‘Despite the stinging criticism and accusations of having double standards, Charles just wasn’t prepared to take any chances when it came to Camilla’s health.’ Among the royal couple’s entourage was a nurse who will care for Camilla during their stay at Birkhall, the Queen Mother’s former country house near Balmoral.
Charles - who campaigns about the dangers of climate change - has been accused of hypocrisy for flying the 500-mile between his Gloucestershire home Highgrove and the Scottish Highlands, which added around 15,000kg to his carbon footprint.
But sources say he felt he had no choice, as he did not want Camilla to suffer the discomfort of making the journey by car, which would only have created carbon emissions of 180kg per passenger.
He is also rejected a scheduled flight, which would have resulted in emissions of 435kg per person, for the same reason.
The duchess underwent her hysterectomy at the London’s King Edward VII Hospital for Officers last month before moving to Clarence House for a period of recuperation.
