Britain’s Prince of Wales asked businesses to save the planet by turning off their lights yesterday (21.03.07).
Charles, speaking at the Seeing Is Believing business seminar at St James’ Palace, recalled driving into London recently and seeing office blocks fully lit up at night.
He said: “I saw office block after office block with their lights on - there was no reason for it. There are simple ways to reduce carbon emissions. Little things go a long way. We are probably the last generation to help protect the planet and we do bear a big responsibility.
‘I think we really do need to start taking a long term view of our actions. What is the point of making short term profit that is weakening a world on which we ultimately depend?’ Charles urged the 130 British and Canadian chief executives present to consider conservation issues when designing or modernising office buildings. In his speech, Charles announced his plans to host a May Day summit to encourage executives to share their experience of cutting carbon emissions and help their customers to do the same.
The Seeing Is Believing scheme is run by Business in the Community, of which the prince is president. The project began in 1990 and has been responsible for initiating a variety of nationally recognised and significant business engagement programmes.

Mohamed Al Fayed’s lawyers yesterday (21.03.07) demanded to see “every scrap of paper” regarding police interviews with Britain’s Prince Charles over the death of Diana.
The Harrods owner’s legal team claim they can find no record of the prince’s interviews with investigators and expressed fears that the lack of information surrounding his contribution to Operation Paget is “just the tip of the iceberg”.
At yesterday’s High Court preliminary hearing Michael Mansfield QC told coroner Baroness Butler-Sloss it was vital they were given access to all the ‘underlying material’.
Charles was interviewed by Lord Stevens regarding Diana’s claims there was a plot to kill her so he could marry again. Lord Stevens’s report into the car crash that killed Diana only said Charles denied any knowledge of her claims. His full statement was not published in the 832-page document. Mr al Fayed – whose son Dodi, Diana’s lover, was also killed in the Paris car crash in 1997 – has succeeded in having the inquest postponed until October so his legal team can gather evidence.
The multi-millionaire believes the crash – which was ruled an accident in the Operation Paget report – was part of a conspiracy plot to kill the princess.
Mansfield said he specifically wants to see the original Paul Burrell letter in which Diana said: ‘This particular phase of my life is the most dangerous - my husband is planning ‘an accident’ in my car, brake failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry.’ He has also requested the notes made by Diana’s lawyer - the late Lord Mishcon - at which Diana claimed both herself and Camilla Parker Bowles were to be ‘put aside’ to allow Charles to marry former royal nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.
Mansfield also wants all material relevant to the ‘Crown Jewels’ - letters from Prince Philip to Diana found in a mahogany box, which also contained a signet ring from James Hewitt and a so-called ‘rape tape’ on which the Princess recorded explosive allegations by former royal servant George Smith that he was raped by a royal aide.
Lady Butler-Sloss said Mr Al Fayed was ‘not automatically entitled to every single page of every single document’ but only what was relevant to the inquest.
She will give her decision in writing at a later date.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth presented a teenage female Army medical officer with the Military Cross yesterday (21.03.07) – the first time the award has been granted to a woman. The queen presented 19-year-old Private Michelle Norris with the top military honour during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, in recognition of her bravery and outstanding service in Iraq. Michelle jumped out of a Warrior armoured vehicle despite being surrounded by sniper fire, in order to help Colour Sergeant Ian Page who had been shot in the face. After meeting the queen, Pte Michelle told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper: “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I’m here with my mum, dad and sister and they have been very proud and supportive of me all the way through it. “I was more concerned about doing my job than what was happening around me. That is what I’m trained for, that is what I was doing.” The queen also awarded a CBE to British actress Penelope Keith, 66, for her efforts helping charities the Actors’ Benevolent Fund, air ambulances and the British Legion. An MBE was awarded to soccer ace Steven Gerrard, who captains Liverpool FC.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth is set to make her first trip to the US in 16 years.
The monarch will be accompanied by husband Prince Philip on the visit, which will include a trip to the world-renowned horse race, the Kentucky Derby.
The royal couple’s American tour is to mark the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement, England’s first permanent settlement in North America. They will be in Virginia on May 3 and 4.
Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine said: ‘This royal visit speaks to the importance of Jamestown to both of our countries, reaffirms the strong, historic ties between our nations and demonstrates a mutual commitment to reinforce these connections as we go forward together.’ The Queen and Philip will attend the Kentucky Derby in Louisville on May 5. They will be in Washington from May 6 to 8, where they will be guests of President George W. Bush.
The Queen previously visited the US in 1957, again in 1976 for the bicentennial celebrations and in 1983 she went to the West Coast. Her last trip was in may 1991.

Britain’s Prince Harry stunned workers at a low-budget restaurant by popping in and ordering a huge English cooked breakfast.
The 22-year-old prince – who is currently training in preparation for six months of service in Iraq - was accompanied by two bodyguards and a couple of his fellow officers as he walked into the roadside diner.
Harry ordered a £6.99 Olympic breakfast, which consists of two fried eggs, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans, friend potatoes and toast - and managed to clear his plate.
Although Harry’s group denied it was him, staff and customers at the Little Chef diner in Suffolk, clearly recognised the famous customer.
Waitress Jean Flack said: “Harry seemed to be a healthy lad who likes his food. He had no airs and graces and was just like an ordinary soldier.” Fellow waitress Vonie Falco then followed the prince to the car park when he left to tell him that she had met his late mother, Princess Diana.
She said: “When I said that Harry turned round, walked over to me and shook my hand.” The chef at the restaurant – which is known for its cheap meals – said: “When I found out I had cooked for a prince I was really happy.”

Music royalties from films and adverts make Britney around $60,000 a year.
She also has an estimated $33.25 million in six high-interest bank accounts.
Her endorsement deals have earned her $21.6 million, including the record-breaking $9.27 million Pepsi deal she signed in 2001. The ‘Toxic’ singer also has deals with Samsung, Toyota, Kirin, Proactiv, Skechers and Nabisco.
Britney’s 2004 deal with Elizabeth Arden earns her royalties on best-selling signature fragrance Curious, plus a skin-care and cosmetics line, amounting to $16.7 million. She is guaranteed to annually earn between $1.96 million and $2.94 million until 2009 from the deal.
Britney owns four homes, including properties in Malibu and Orlando, plus a vast Louisiana forest – the total worth of which is around $22.6 million. The 25-year-old has also earned $6.5 million from her TV appearances, plus magazine and film deals - including $3 million for her role in ‘Crossroads’.
Britney, who checked out of Malibu’s Promises rehab centre this week, has been advised to try and revive her music career as soon as possible.
Executive editor of Rolling Stone magazine Joe Levy said: ‘The best thing Britney can do right now is take some time away for herself and make a great record.
‘The old saying is that she’s just one hit away from a comeback. Side by side is the saying that there’s no such thing as bad publicity.’ Forbes magazine recently ranked Britney as the 12th richest woman in entertainment.

The 36-year-old beauty has reportedly been photographed by celebrity lensman Steve Klein as she struts into work.
Naomi is expected to do a studio photo shoot with the top photographer – who has worked with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt – after her community service is over. The shoot is believed to be for the July issue of the magazine.

Sir Paul McCartney has signed a deal with the new Starbucks record label, it was announced yesterday (21.03.07). The former Beatle is the first artist to be signed by the coffee giant’s new music venture, Hear Music. Sir Paul, 64, took part in the Seattle-based company’s annual meeting via video link from London. Starbucks – the world’s largest specialist coffee retailer – announced earlier this month that it was joining forces with Concord Music Group to launch new label Hear Music, which will be based in Los Angeles.
Sir Paul is leaving Capitol Records who he has worked with on and off for 43 years, to join the new label.
In a statement, Sir Paul said of Hear Music: "For me, the great thing is the commitment and the passion and the love of music, which as an artist is good to see. It’s a new world now and people are thinking of new ways to reach the people, and for me that’s always been my aim." According to reports, there had been a bidding war for Paul’s new album which is now set for release in the early summer.

The actor’s dad, Charles Harrelson, who had been serving two life sentences in a maximum-security Colorado federal prison for the 1979 slaying of a federal judge, died last week aged 69. A Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman, Felicia Ponce, said: "He was found unresponsive in his cell on March 15." Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman has ruled that Charles most likely died of a heart attack in his sleep.
Woody was just seven-years-old when his father was first jailed, for killing a Texan businessman.
In 1982 – when Woody was in college - Charles was convicted of slaying a federal judge in San Antonio, Texas, in what prosecutors described as a $250,000 contract murder. He maintained his innocence and appealed in 1998, but the conviction was upheld. A representative for Woody was not available for comment.

The prestigious Golden Lion Award will pay homage to the American filmmaker - renowned for eccentric films, including ‘Edward Scissorhands’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Corpse Bride’.
Festival director, Marco Müller, said: ‘Tim Burton is a cinematic genius, the most imaginative child of the new age of cinema. He has a unique talent of being able to imbue his fantasies with emotional depth.’ Organisers have also declared September 5 ‘Tim Burton Day’ and have promised guests a special ’surprise offering’ from the 48-year-old filmmaker.
Venice hosted the international premiere of Burton’s ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ in 1994 and the world premiere of his Oscar-nominated ‘Corpse Bride’ in 2005.
Previous winners of the honorary Golden Lion Award – which was introduced in 1970 to accompany the Golden Lion best film prize - include Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen.

The ‘Desperate Housewives’ star entered a treatment facility on Monday (19.03.07) following a four day drinking binge at Los Angeles’ Mondrian hotel.
A representative for Metcalfe said: "On Monday, March 19, Jesse Metcalfe entered a rehab facility to deal with alcohol issues. He realised he had a problem and was anxious to deal with it immediately.
"The actor, best known as the hunky gardener on the ABC show ‘Desperate Housewives’ and the star of the film ‘John Tucker Must Die,’ hopes that the media will allow him the privacy to deal properly with his treatment.’ Jesse, who is dating Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle, spent four days partying at the Mondrian last week, during which guests said he acted "very angry and out of control".
A guest told the New York Post newspaper: "He was blacklisted. He had been partying for four days straight last week and being really mean to the staff.
"Then, on Friday (16.03.07), he went up at the doorman at Skybar because they wouldn’t let him in. That was the last straw.’ Jesse was refused a guest room on Saturday (17.03.07) but a hotel representative says he is not officially banned.

The pregnant singer was reportedly set to tie the knot with her Welsh rugby star lover Gavin Henson next month at Castell Coch, a luxury castle near Cardiff.

She is currently facing charges of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) after she was stopped by police in December for driving the wrong way on a California Highway. She admitted to police she had smoked marijuana and taken the strong painkiller Vicodin.

The model-turned-entrepreneur suprised BBC bosses by offering to shoot and fund her own scenes for an upcoming documentary on The Money Programme while working in Dubai.
A BBC source says, "We wanted to chart how Elle is moving from modelling into business. We simply ran out of money and didn’t have anything budgeted for Dubai.
"Elle is astute with money and was quite happy to take one of our cameras and do the filming herself. We are using her footage and it is very good. She obviously learned a lot from her time in front of the cameras."
