New Zealand opera star DAME KIRI TE KANAWA has won a court case in Australia after she was accused of breach of contract after cancelling a series of tour dates in the region with rocker JOHN FARNHAM in 2005.
Promoters Leading Edge Events were suing Te Kanawa and her ex-manager NICK GRACE for AUS$2 million (£815,000/$1.58 million), after they claimed they had lost money from publicity and ticket sales from the cancellation of the tour.
But Judge PATRICIA BERGIN ruled that no official contract had been signed, so Te Kanawa was not in breach of any agreement.
The 63-year-old confessed last month (FEB07) that she pulled the plug on the live dates because she was shocked by Farnham’s onstage behaviour, after seeing footage of the star collecting women’s lingerie "as some sort of trophy" at a concert.
The soprano told a court in Sydney, "I was concerned about the knickers and underwear apparel being thrown at him and him collecting it and obviously holding it in his hand as some sort of trophy.
"If this is what he does, how do I control this? It was disrespectful to me in particular." However, Judge Bergin ordered that Leading Edge were entitled to AUS$128,000 (£52,000/$101,400) for costs incurred from Mattane, the company that employed Te Kanawa.
