Diamond in the rough
A $25,000 diamond was found in a drain at the US prison holding the man accused of stealing it two years ago.
Bret Allen Langford reportedly asked to be shown the two-carat gem at a Jewelry Express shop before fleeing in 2005.
He was arrested and charged although police did not retrieve the diamond.
Langford was sent to Theo Lacy Branch Jail in California to await trial.
This week his representative told jail officials to search the prison’s drains for the diamond, where it was soon found.
Langford claimed that after stealing the diamond, he swallowed and regurgitated it each time he was transferred. But before a search last year, he threw the diamond into a shower stall and it fell down the drain.
