TOLKIEN MEMORIAL SPARKS LOCAL ROWS
Plans for a giant £70,000 ($136,500) statue to celebrate the life of THE LORD OF THE RINGS author J.R.R. TOLKIEN in Birmingham, England, have sparked a row among locals, who brand the memorial an "eyesore".
The stainless steel sculpture - of walking tree TREEBEARD THE ENT from the fantasy trilogy - was created by the writer’s great nephew TIM TOLKIEN, and stands at 21 feet (6.4 metres) tall.
Local authorities had approved plans to install the statue near Tolkien’s childhood home, but more than 100 residents have signed a petition objecting to the "absurd" idea, citing fears the statue would be "out of proportion" and an "oversized eyesore" in its natural surroundings, as well as a target for vandals.
