The 43-year-old star will play the opening concert on June 9 at the much-delayed 90,000 capacity super-venue as part of his European tour.
A source said: ‘George feels very honoured. It’s the venue that everybody wants to play.’ George played several memorable shows at the old Wembley Stadium, which was demolished in 2002.
He was part of the line-up for Live Aid in 1985, performed at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday concert in 1998 and stole the show at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in 1992.
It was also the venue for the final Wham! show, ‘The Finale’, which took place in 1986.
It was recently reported that George had asked former Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley to take part in a reunion show at the new stadium.
Rumours are rife that Andrew will join George on stage on June 9.
Tickets for George’s Wembley concert go on sale on Thursday (08.03.07).

The ‘Good Shepherd’ star filed papers with Vietnamese and US officials to become the child’s guardian as a single parent last week.
Under Vietnamese law single parents who are co-habiting cannot adopt.
International adoption official Tatiana Beams said: ‘This is a clear contradiction of Vietnamese law, and such situations would not be allowed for other couples.
‘Most co-habiting couples who try to adopt as a single parent are either turned away from agencies or face difficulties.’ The US department dealing with the matter insists it abides by Vietnamese rules when it comes to adopting from the country, but has not opposed Angelina’s action.
The 31-year-old star filed for adoption as a single parent, even though her boyfriend, Brad Pitt, has become the adoptive father of her five-year-old Cambodian son Maddox and two-year-old Ethiopian daughter Zahara.
The family, who also have a ten-month-old biological daughter Shiloh together, live together in New Orleans.

JOHN TRAVOLTA donated $15,000 (£7,700) to victims of a tornado in Florida at the premiere of his new biker film WILD HOGS on Friday night (02MAR07).
The actor presented a personal cheque to Mayor MAX PULLEN of Lady Lake, Florida, where a string of tornadoes killed 21 people in the area on 2 February (07).
Travolta, who has lived in nearby Ocala for four years, said, "These things happen in Florida and when they happen we all have to do something to help.
"I just felt the time was right. We’re promoting a movie. I think the best movie openings and promotions are when you can do it for charity and help people. I live here. These are my people." Pullen added, "This means a lot and helps lift the spirit of our people. When they know somebody as big a star as John Travolta cares about them, it makes a difference." The screening of the biker comedy raised an additional $15,000 and Ocala Mayor RANDY EWERS presented the star with a key to the city.
Wild Hogs, which features an ensemble cast including TIM ALLEN, WILLIAM H MACY and MARTIN LAWRENCE, also scored big at the box office over the weekend, taking in $38 million (£19.5 million).

A US reality TV star was arrested at the weekend (03/04MAR05) after attempting to hinder police as they investigated underage drinkers in North Carolina.
Former LAGUNA BEACH star JASON WAHLER was arrested and booked by cops after allegedly resisting a public officer during a raid at a nightclub.
According to police sources, obtained by TMZ.com, Wahler, 20, lied about his age when he was approached by members of the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division inside Rumors nightclub.
Wahler claimed he wasn’t carrying any identification and was taken to Pitt County Jail early on Saturday morning (03MAR07), where sources claim he was anything but co-operative.
Wahler was later released on $1,000 (£5,130) bail. He is due to back in court next month (APR07).

Heavy rock group THE COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINERS are using the latest scratch-and-sniff technology to give their new album the whiff of rotting meat.
The US trio’s album, OLIDOUS OPERETTAS, will come with the aroma of decaying flesh.
Frontman MORTON FAIRBANKS explains, "It will be a scented-face CD, which essentially means it will be scratch-’n'-sniff-able… Our CD will smell like rotten meat." The singer admits his smelly idea was deemed more than a little unsavoury by many of the record labels he approached with a view to releasing the album.
