Hawkins is teaming up with Beverlei Brown to sing ‘They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To’ in a televised battle with six other contestants wanting to represent their country.
Hawkins said: ‘I had a dream I should do it. I think I’d got to the vote when I woke up.’ Other contestants include former East17 member Brian Harvey, Big Brovaz, Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon, and an unknown singer called Cyndi.
Morrissey has dropped out of the line-up.
Hawkins, 31, is looking forward to being back on stage and says competing in Eurovision has always been his dream.
He said: ‘When you’ve enjoyed a long break it’s good to come back with something as big and glamorous. It’s my new ambition. Eurovision is always something I wanted to do.’ Hawkins and Brown will be competing on BBC1’s ‘Eurovision: Making Your Mind up’ on March 17.
The winning contestant will represent the UK in the Eurovision final in Helsinki, Finland, in May.
