Director SPIKE LEE has added a top American journalism award to his slew of filmmaking plaudits, for his anti-US government movie covering the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The MALCOLM X filmmaker was honoured for WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS, which documents life after the storm hit in August 2005.
Lee was lauded alongside longtime collaborator, SAM POLLARD, who produced the film, for illustrating evidence of the government’s poor handling of the situation in New Orleans post-Katrina.
The awards, created in honour of CBS reporter GEORGE W. POLK who died reporting from the Greek civil war, are regarded as one of journalism’s top prizes.
Pollard and Lee have worked together on MO’ BETTER BLUES, JUNGLE FEVER, GIRL 6, CLOCKERS and BAMBOOZLED. The pair will receieve their award on 12 April (07) at a ceremony in New York.

LATEST: Model CAPRICE BOURRET has slammed reports she’s being treated in a rehab clinic in London - insisting she’s on a skiing holiday 6,000 miles away in South Africa.
A British newspaper today claimed the American model was being treated at The Priory - notorious for its string of celebrity clients - undergoing addiction therapy and counselling for depression.
Another paper even claimed she is on suicide watch after taking a suspected overdose.
But the 35-year-old’s spokesman JONATHAN LIPMAN says, "The allegations are untrue. Caprice is not in rehab. She is very happy, very well and is taking a short skiing holiday with her boyfriend this week before returning to run her businesses in the UK."

Singer GERI HALLIWELL wants to leave her pop career behind and try her hand at theatre.

SIR BOB GELDOF’s 17-year-old daughter PEACHES is a compulsive thief and regular stole clothes from a childhood pal, according a longtime family friend.
Peaches was last week spotted wearing designer clothes she allegedly stole from the set of a magazine photoshoot - months after she was accused of shoplifting from a London store.
Author SOPHIE PARKIN, who has known the budding DJ since she was a baby, claims Peaches has been caught stealing before.
She tells British magazine Closer, "I wasn’t surprised when I heard she’d supposedly taken the designer clothes - she’s been helping herself for years.
Peaches used to nick CARSON (Parkin’s 16-year-old daughter)’s clothes all the time, but she’d deny she had them when challenged.
"Finally, four years ago, I got fed up and went to Peaches’ house to get them back. I filled up three carrier bags with clothes."

Rapper E-40 has rubbished reports he was the victim of a fatal drive-by shooting this weekend (begs16FEB07) after "outrageous" news surfaced claiming the star had met his untimely demise.
The 39-year-old - real name EARL STEVENS - released a statement via his lawyer ZVI B. EDELMAN to dispel the false rumours and put fans at ease.
He says, "Mr Stevens is alive and well in Las Vegas enjoying all-star weekend and has not been the victim of any shooting or accident.

Rapper GILLIE DA KID has been released from jail after being arrested and charged with drug dealing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania earlier this month (06FEB07), his manager has confirmed.
Gillie Da Kid - real name S’ARD NASIR - was arrested with five other people on 6 February (07) after police discovered 89 pounds (40 kilograms) of marijuana, worth an estimated $404,000 (£207,179), at two addresses in the city.
The rapper was freed from custody on Friday (16FEB07), but he and his associates stand accused of conspiracy and possessing narcotics with intent to deliver.
Nasir’s manager, YANNA B. says, "He is extremely happy to be home and is resting comfortably with his family. He maintains his innocence and is looking forward to promoting and releasing his upcoming mixtape album." The former MAJOR FIGGAS member is also under investigation for his involvement in another house in the area, where police confiscated cocaine worth $6 million (£3,075,000) last year (06), according to AllHipHop.com.

DREAMGIRLS star JENNIFER HUDSON has shunned pre-Oscar parties - opting instead for an evening at her family’s church to prepare for Sunday night’s (25FEB07) Academy Awards.
The nominated actress headlined gospel concert "An Evening Of Praise With Jennifer Hudson" last night (19FEB07), entertaining over 3,000 revellers at the Progressive Baptist Church in Chicago.
Hudson says, "I don’t do clubs. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I’m not having no club party - I better have a praise party." Audience member BRENDA MORGAN adds, "It’s an exciting time because the city is so rich in the gospel tradition. It’s a great night. We’re so proud of Ms Hudson."

AEROSMITH bassist TOM HAMILTON is returning to the band and has paid tribute to the fans who helped him win his battle with throat cancer.
After a year spent recovering from the disease, the rocker is now fit and ready to return to the stage when the band begin their 2007 World Tour in April (07) - and he claims the band’s devotees deserve much of the credit.
He says, "I need to acknowledge some of the hardest of hardcore Aerosmith fans who went way above the call.
"A few months ago when I was still feeling kind of wiped out they made me a really cool get well gift. It’s a huge scrapbook where every page is a handmade tribute to the band. Specifically each page is a get well wish done for me to the n-th degree. The pages are full of photos and handmade graphics that must have taken each person hours upon hours to finish. I think that’s the most moving part, thinking of how much time and effort was put into making it." He adds, "It feels really good to be up and running and looking forward to going on the road. It’s still very weird to think about missing a whole last tour. We’ve got a busy year coming up. After the European tour we take a short break and then go back into the studio. We haven’t done a new album in a while and we really feel enthusiastic about showing everybody what’s on our musical mind.
"The band is getting ready to go back on the road to some places we haven’t been to in a really long time We’re doing our first tour of Europe in about a decade. Don’t ask me how all this time went by so fast. All I know is how ready we are to come and make up for it."

The singer-turned-actress was wrong to believe she didn’t need her parents anymore after finding fame at just 15 as a pop star.
She said: ‘I made them redundant as parents because I thought I didn’t need them. When I was 15, I would say, ‘Mum, I’ve got a mortgage and a boyfriend.
I can handle it.’ ‘Of course I did need them, but I pushed them further and further away. That ’s the thing I feel most guilty about, shutting them out.’ Billie, now 24, was devastated when her parents sold their story to a newspaper, but now understands they were victims of her success too.
She said: ‘I would call them when I was in despair and say, ‘Can you come and get me?’ And they would always be there. But then they wouldn’t hear from me for weeks.’ The former ‘Doctor Who’ actress has since repaired her relationship with her parents.
She said: ‘I’ve said sorry to them for all the hurt I caused them, it was very important to me to do that.’

TV presenter Norton confessed says Young’s romantic snub was the worst thing anyone has ever said to him.
Norton, 43, said: ‘Will Young once told me, ‘I could never go out with you - it would destroy my career.’ ‘ The comic star - whose new series ‘The Graham Norton Show’ starts this week - also insists he is yet to meet the ‘love of his life’.
Last year, Norton split from his toyboy lover Kristian Seeber, 24, and says his love life has been ‘non-existent’ since.

The show attracted a wide audience for its explicit sex scenes, candid dialogue and Carrie’s unique fashion sense.
After the series ended Cattrall and Parker famously fell out after Cattrall dashed hopes of a film version by refusing to take part.
Parker has always been willing to reprise her famous role, recently saying: ‘Never say never. It was such a great show it would be fantastic to go back.’
