Bilk round
A Japanese liquor shop owner has come up with an unusual solution for the country’s excess milk supplies - they are using it to make beer.
‘Bilk’ - a combination of 30 per cent milk and beer - went on sale earlier this month and, apart from a faint milky scent, it looks and tastes just like ordinary beer.
Chitoshi Nakahara, head of the Nakahara liquor shop on the northernmost island of Hokkaido, said: "We came up with the idea after hearing about surplus milk." The shop spent six months developing Bilk with a local brewer after Hokkaido was forced to dispose of nearly 900 tonnes of surplus milk last March.
Due to popular demand, Bilk - which is available in six local shops and by mail order - is currently out of stock.
