Nuns on the run
The Greek Orthodox Church are hunting 55 nuns - all called Maria - who are on the run after racking up debts of £400,000.
The nuns of the St Kyrikos and Ioulite convent in Northern Greece had been secretly running a knitwear company for ten years and spent their money travelling to fashion shows across Europe.
They ran into problems after spending a fortune on new machinery. After the knitting machines were taken away in a lorry, the nuns disappeared.
Church officials suspect the fugitives are hiding in a Volos monastery in central Greece.
The nuns’ lawyer Dionysios Pelekis asked the church to settle the debt by selling 16 of their properties. The request was refused.
