Italian-born opera composer GIAN CARLO MENOTTI has died in a Monaco hospital at the age of 95.
The two-time Pulitzer Prize winning composer died "pretty peacefully and without any pain" yesterday (01FEB07), his son FRANCIS confirmed.
Menotti received his formal musical training at Milan’s Verdi Conservatory before moving to the US in 1923 to study at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. Italian Culture Minister FRANCESCO RUTELLI has led the tributes to Menotti, saying, "He was one of the most charismatic figures in the arts world. He was an important multicultural and international crossroads of the arts."
