<pre>The low-budget comedy unexpectedly took home the prestigious accolade, which
is the ceremony’s equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar.
Greg Kinnear, who plays stressed dad Richard in the film, expressed his
Oscar hopes as he accepted the prize.
He said: ‘I think we feel good. An Oscar would mean a great deal to us.
Making a movie isn’t always a great experience, that’s the facts. But this
really was a remarkable experience.’
British actress Dame Helen Mirren picked up two gongs on the night, Female
Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in ‘The Queen’ and Female Actor
in a TV Movie or Mini-series for ‘Elizabeth I’.
As she accepted her award for ‘The Queen’, Mirren confessed she was
initially not keen on playing Elizabeth II.
She quipped: ‘I saw those terrible shoes and tweed skirts laid out in a row
and I cried.’
Jennifer Hudson walked away with the award for Female Actor in a Supporting
Role for her performance in ‘Dreamgirls’, while Forest Whitaker claimed the
Male Actor in a Leading Role prize for ‘Last King Of Scotland’.
Whitaker said: ‘Everybody tells me not to get carried away, because I get
carried away sometimes, but whatever. I’m really happy to receive this
award.’
Julie Andrews was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
