JACKSON LAWYER RECALLS BUGGED FLIGHT
LATEST: A lawyer who once worked for MICHAEL JACKSON yesterday (23JAN07) told a court how he went to extraordinary lengths to make sure his confidential conversations with the pop superstar were not secretly recorded.
MARK GERAGOS is suing plane company XtraJet after he was secretly videotaped with the THRILLER singer on a flight from Las Vegas, Nevada to Santa Barbara, California in November 2003. At the end of the flight Jackson surrendered himself to authorities on child molestation charges.
Jackson, who was acquitted of the molestation charges in 2005, was initially a co-plaintiff in the civil lawsuit against XtraJet but no longer is.
Geragos said, "I can’t think of any act more distressing to me at a professional level than what was done (on that flight)." Geragos told the non-jury Los Angeles hearing he began searching for bugging devices following the flight and met clients in hotel rooms and under motorway overpasses. He also testified to twice sending a colleague abroad to avoid a potential leak via email or on the phone.
Lawyers in the case waived their right to a jury so a Los Angeles Superior Court judge will decide the outcome.
In 2005, JEFFREY BORER, the owner of XtraJet in 2003, and ARVEL JETT REEVES admitted to installing two digital video recorders on the plane. Borer was sentenced to six months of home detention and Reeves to eight months in prison.
Both were also fined.
