MUSIC VENUE HAMMERSMITH PALAIS TO BE DEMOLISHED
Legendary British venue the Hammersmith Palais is to be destroyed after music fans lost their fight to block demolition plans yesterday (22JAN07).
London’s Hammersmith and Fulham Council have approved proposals by developers Parkway Properties to knock the venue down and build an office block and restaurant in its place.
The venue has played host to gigs by U2, THE ROLLING STONES and the SEX PISTOLS during its 90-year history, and was immortalised in THE CLASH’s 1978 single (WHITE MAN) IN HAMMERSMITH PALAIS.
Hammersmith and Fulham councillor LUCY IBIMY says, "We recognise the contribution the Palais has made to the west London music scene, but the golden days of the club are long gone."
