MINGHELLA CUTS FLOWER TRIBUTES TO BOMB VICTIMS FROM HIS FILM

THE ENGLISH PATIENT director ANTHONY MINGHELLA was forced to cut footage of the 7/7 London bombings out of his new movie because it looked as if he was using the tragedy in the film.
One of the 2005 terrorist attacks on the city happened within yards of the home of ROBIN WRIGHT PENN’s character in BREAKING & ENTERING and the cast and crew couldn’t avoid the horror of the events for weeks after the bombing took place.
But when Minghella edited his movie and saw footage of flower tributes to those who had perished in the background of certain scenes, he felt he had to remove them.
The director says, "We removed one shot where (stars) JULIETTE (BINOCHE) and JUDE (LAW) were in a taxi, on their way to their friend’s apartment, and we went past a tribute to the bombs of 7/7.
"People had been leaving flowers, literally, just by where we were shooting, right around the corner.
"Of course, the movie is a fiction and you have to be very careful about how you create a fiction. I just couldn’t live with that in the movie because it felt like we were trying to pretend like we had more significance than we had.
So we removed that scene." Over 50 people were killed in the four bombings, which brought London’s public transport system to a standstill.
