NUTRITIONISTS APPLAUD NEW US MODEL GUIDELINES
Officials at America’s National Eating Disorders Association have applauded new guidelines restricting super skinny models from working the catwalks of the world.
In an effort to stop desperate models from starving themselves and turning into anorexics for catwalk assignments, industry bosses began calling for weight mass tests to determine if girls were naturally thin or potential anorexics last year (06) As a result, many models were kicked off runways at European fashion shows after they were told they were too skinny.
And now the modelling community is getting even stricter - the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced on Friday (12JAN07) they would be cracking down on the unhealthy image of the starving stunner by requiring models with eating disorders to seek professional help; not permitting models with an eating disorder to work without a doctor’s approval; and improving nutritional content of food catered backstage at fashion shows.
The guidelines have been welcomed by NEDA bosses, who have been campaigning for industry heads to take anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders in their ranks seriously - but they urge modelling agencies to go even further.
NEDA CEO LYNN GREFE says, "The National Eating Disorders Association applauds the Council of Fashion Designers of America for opening a dialogue, but we urge them to further their influence and control beyond that of a guideline.
"Simply making a suggestion is a band-aid on a much larger wound. Our concern is, who is going to monitor this programme? What are the next steps? Eating disorders kill. For the sake of the models themselves and the young women who look up to them, change is vital."
