KOOPA’S TRAGEDY BEHIND CHART HISTORY
Rock band KOOPA’s UK chart triumph yesterday (14JAN07) has been marred by the recent death of the father of two bandmembers.
The British band became the first unsigned act to enter the UK Top 40 with single BLAG, STEAL AND BORROW after new chart rules for the first time allowed download singles to enter the chart, even if there is no physical format released.
But despite the song reaching number 31, the band are still in shock with the death of their mentor MARTIN COOPER - father to band members OLLIE and STUART.
He died of a heart attack last Tuesday (09JAN07) and never knew the band were on course to make chart history.
Singer JOE MURPHY says, "Martin died just five hours before we learned we had entered the charts. He would have been more delighted than anyone because he was such a huge supporter.
"It should have been the happiest week of our lives but in many ways it has been the saddest."
