Director KEVIN MACDONALD has refused to rule out documenting SADDAM HUSSEIN’s last days on film, but insists now is not the time to give the Iraqi tyrant’s last moments a Hollywood makeover.
The 39-year-old Scot has received huge critical acclaim for his latest movie THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, which details former Ugandan dictator IDI AMIN’s time in power.
But despite acknowledging the possibility of similar treatment for Saddam Hussein, who was controversially hanged last month (30DEC06), MacDonald insists it will be a few years yet before anything materialises.
He says, "You need a passage of time before you can tackle these subjects.
Making a film now, using an actor, would be too difficult.
"We need to do a bit of forgetting first. Only then can we allow ourselves to reimagine."

The widow of charismatic TV naturalist STEVE IRWIN broke down in tears on American TV last night (10JAN07) when she described how her children were coping without their beloved father.
TERRI IRWIN appeared on the TONIGHT SHOW with JAY LENO and wept as she recalled the difficult days following the CROCODILE HUNTER star’s death last September (06) from a stingray barb to the chest. She also discussed how kids BINDI and BOB were dealing with the tragedy.
Earlier today (11JAN07) Terri appeared on the ELLEN DeGENERES SHOW where she confessed she often felt her marriage with the late conservationist was a figment of her imagination.
She said, "It ebbs and it flows and I tell you, sometimes I expect him to walk in the door, and other times I just think it’s like one of those really good movies that you want to remember.
"Sometimes you think, ‘I’m not remembering all the last 14 years,’ but I think that’s just a protection device." Terri added her husband had never been worried about death, recalling, "Steve was never afraid for his own mortality. Countless times he has said to me, ‘Okay, now I can die. This is the most incredible thing I’ve ever done, now I can die,’ and then we’d go and swim with the manatees, and then he’d go, ‘Okay, now I can die.’"

LATEST: Academy Award winner MERYL STREEP is putting her vocal talents to the test in the Hollywood adaptation of ABBA musical MAMMA MIA! THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA star, 57, is set to play DONNA, whose daughter SOPHIE is due to be married when she embarks on a journey to discover the identity of her father. It will be Streep’s first musical.
The film’s producer, JUDY CRAYMER, says, "(Streep) was always at the top of our wish list.
"She encapsulates the spirit and energy and has the powerhouse qualities that character requires." The movie features ABBA songwriters BJORN ULVAEUS and BENNY ANDERSON as executive producers, while the picture will be produced by TOM HANKS’ production company Playtone.
Mamma Mia! will begin shooting later this year (07) in London and Greece, and reports suggest the film’s release will coincide with the musical’s 10th anniversary in 2009.

LIMP BIZKIT frontman FRED DURST’s directing debut has been given the seal of approval by his cast.
The rocker-turned-moviemaker has just finished shooting his first film, THE EDUCATION OF CHARLIE BANKS, and actors on set are raving about his professionalism.
CHRIS MARQUETTE, who plays young New Yorker DANNY in the movie, tells MTV, "He was really personable and insanely calm.
"We did all our prep work, and when we got to the set he just let it go. It was cool. His confidence was incredible." Although The Education Of Charlie Banks marks Durst’s first feature film, the controversial singer has directed many of his band’s music videos in the past.

Former NIRVANA guitarist PAT SMEAR has signed to help make a new movie about his former punk band THE GERMS.
Smear will act as musical director on WHO WE DO IS SECRET, which charts the life of the band widely acknowledged to have inspired modern groups like GREEN DAY.
The film’s MySpace page describes it as "the birth of punk rock in Hollywood and the rise of hardcore".
ER star SHANE WEST will play frontman DARBY CRASH - who died in 1980 - and RICK GONZALES will play Smear. The film is expected to premiere at this month’s (18-28JAN07) Sundance Film Festival in the US.

An affiliate of DIPSET rapper JIM JONES has been held in police custody following his first court appearance on Tuesday (09JAN07) on charges of murder and robbery relating to an incident in 2006.
Aspiring rapper CHARLY ‘MAX B’ WINGATE - who is signed to Jones’ Byrd Gang Records - was arrested in September (29SEP06) on suspicion of planning the murder of Florida native DAVID TAYLOR, after a robbery at a hotel in Fort Lee, New Jersey, went wrong.
Wingate allegedly set up the heist after his girlfriend, exotic dancer GINA MARIE CONWAY, told him of meeting with rich businessmen Taylor and ALLAN ‘JAY’ PLOWDEN at the hotel.
He then recruited friend KELVIN LEERDAM to pull off the robbery, with the help of Conway to seduce the victims.
Prosecutor CATHERINE FANTUZZI said Wingate was linked to the crime by phone calls made by Leerdam immediately before and after the incident.
He will remain behind bars on $2 million (£1 million) bail at Bergen County Jail until the trial ends.

LATEST: Filmmaker ANTON CORBIJN is baffled by claims he had a bust up with members of the band NEW ORDER over his forthcoming film CONTROL - insisting he’s their biggest fan and "wouldn’t dare".
Control is about JOY DIVISION, from whom New Order were formed when frontman IAN CURTIS committed suicide in 1980.
New Order bassist PETER HOOK recently threatened to pull out of soundtrack commitments for the film, claiming Corbijn was too domineering.
He said, "I’m p**sed about the movie right now because Anton Corbijn seems to be getting too much control, precisely.
"I would have preferred that he showed more respect for us. We’re supposed to (record the film’s soundtrack) but the problem is that he’s telling us what to do. If we don’t tell him how to direct, why is he telling us how to make music?" But Corbijn insists, "There is no argument whatsoever between New Order and myself or Hooky and me.
"I am in control of Control as any director worth his celluloid should be in charge of his film, but I am not telling the band that I moved to the UK for in 1979 how to write songs. Please. I wouldn’t dare."

Rapper THE GAME has slammed the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star using the same stage name, claiming it was he who first used the moniker.
The DREAMS hitmaker - real name JAYCEON TAYLOR - is furious the TV heavyweight has copied his signature, and challenges his namesake to a fight to prove his credentials.
He says, "I’m much stronger than (wrestler The Game) is. I was ‘The Game’ long before he came about.
"He’s on TV wrestling and it’s pretend, made up. I wrestle in real life and I win."

Latino rapper N.O.R.E. has appeared in a New York court to defend his friend DARRYL HENDERSON, claiming he knew nothing about his pals alleged background as a gang member.
Henderson and two other members of the Bronx street gang, Murder Unit, stand accused of killing three men near the Yankee Stadium in January 2002, and stealing 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of cocaine worth more than $500,000 (£257,506).
The NOTHIN’ hitmaker - real name VICTOR SANTIAGO - met Henderson eight years ago (99) in the Bronx area of New York and took him on tour, hiring him to run errands.
N.O.R.E. also befriended members of Murder Unit, allegedly taking them on the road with no knowledge of their violent histories and drug dealings.
However, he did admit to living up the "gangsta" lifestyle to boost his reputation.
He says, "Hardcore hip hop tends to sell more records. It’s about selling an image." The hip hop star’s memory repeatedly came under fire from prosecutor DAVID M RODY for being sketchy, after N.O.R.E. denied Henderson was ever involved in violence when they were together.
Henderson has admitted to selling drugs, but is pleading not guilty to the murder charges. If convicted, he could face the death sentence.

Veteran British rockers NEW ORDER have hit out at claims they have split, despite drummer STEPHEN MORRIS’ confession last year (05).
Morris shocked fans when he said the band - he, BERNARD SUMNER, PETER HOOK and PHIL CUNNINGHAM - were contemplating their future, adding, "We should stop for a while." The model-and-actress has given strict instructions to friends and family informing them to wear traditional Indian clothes and to look "glamorous and fabulous" when she weds Indian businessman Arun Nayar this March.
Guests, including fellow celebrities David and Victoria Beckham and Sir Elton John, will have to wear kurtas (long tunics) if they’re a man, while the women are expected to wear saris.
To ensure guests get it right, Liz and Arun are setting up a shop in the Hilton Towers Hotel, in Mumbai, Rajasthan, where half of the wedding will take place, which will stock turbans, saris and bindis.
Liz’s letter said: "Please don’t panic.all Indian clothes can be bought when you arrive in India, where they will be much nicer." The couple’s extended wedding celebrations will begin with a traditional English ceremony at Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire, on March 3, followed by two days of partying in Mumbai and a traditional Indian ceremony on March 9.
Liz, 41, is planning to wear 13 different outfits over the course of her nuptials, including gowns specially made by her fashion designer friend Donatella Versace and traditional Indian outfits.
Her sari for the main Indian ceremony will probably be red, the traditional colour for Hindu brides.

David - who is married to Jennifer’s best friend Courteney Cox - is convinced Jennifer and Brad’s marriage would have survived if he hadn’t met Angelina.
In an interview with US DJ Howard Stern, the actor said: "Jennifer is great.
When her marriage to Brad ended, it was sad. I love Brad, he’s a great guy but he did some stuff that hurt our friend.

Following a string of drunken blunders, the British singer, who is known for her drinking binges, is taking a break from the bottle.
She told Britain’s Radio 1: "I’m not drinking anything at the moment. I’m detoxing. Normally I drink everything, apart from gin and beer, but nothing at the moment." The surprise announcement comes just days after Amy, 23, angered fans by running off stage to be sick during a performance at London club GAY.
The tattooed singer managed just one song before throwing up at the side of the stage and refusing to return.
Amy, whose second album ‘Back to Black’ is currently riding high in the charts, had reportedly spent the day drinking with fellow wild-child Kelly Osbourne.
Last October, Amy admitted punching a girl in the face after she criticised her performance, saying: "I’m a nasty drunk."
