Tree love
Two trees in an Indian town have been "married" by the townsfolk to ward off evil spirits.
Local people were worried by a string of accidental deaths, murders and burglaries and decided a banyan tree should tie the knot with the tree it had wrapped its branches around.
Local official Gouranga Mandal said: "There was an evil eye casting a spell and a few government employees had planted two trees here to bring peace but could not organise the marriage ceremony as they died from illness." Over 250 people gathered around the trees for the ceremony this week while priests chanted hymns and decorated the trees with coloured cloth, streaks of vermilion and garlands of flowers.
Lakshmi Das, a 30-year-old housewife, gave the trees two saris as wedding gifts, saying: "Only the trees can save us."
