Actress THANDIE NEWTON fought an emotional battle in new movie THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, because she thought portraying a wayward mother could "demonise" her.
Newton, who has two children, RIPLEY and NICO, with writer OL PARKER, found it hard to sympathise with the role of LINDA, who gives up son CHRISTOPHER to on-screen dad WILL SMITH.
Speaking to the New York Post, she says, "Doing this was a real risk. I can cry that the movie is being appreciated because that’s so meaningful for me.
"I can’t tell you how scared I was to do this.
"I’m a mum myself. With two children. A mother to give up her child? How do I play this so that you feel for her . . . see what she’s going through? "I was really nervous to be sure you’d understand her reasons and sympathise.

Actress KATE WINSLET wants to team up with her Oscar-winning director husband SAM MENDES to work on a movie, so she can experience the "real him".
The couple, who have been married for three years, haven’t yet crossed professional paths in Hollywood, but TITANIC star Winslet says she’s looking forward to collaborating with the AMERICAN BEAUTY filmmaker within the next few years.
She says, "(We’ll team up) probably in the next two years. It’s almost like there’s a big part of him that I’ve never had proper access to.
"Quite honestly, I just think we’d have a massive laugh."

British actress SIENNA MILLER has launched a new clothing line with her fashion designer sister SAVANNAH.
The ALFIE star, who recently split from actor JUDE LAW, is fronting the new Twenty8Twelve range, which is named after her birthday.
The 80-piece collection takes its inspiration from singer PATTI SMITH, Dickensian London and Beat poetry of the 1950s and 1960s.
She says, "I’ve always loved fashion, and Savannah got a first in Design at St Martins (a London college of art and design). We hadn’t thought to pursue it together, but this just happened organically. And setting up a label with your sister is a lot of fun - there haven’t been any fights yet." The actress, who is famed for her stylish threads, concedes not all her designs have been a resounding success.
She says, "Some trousers that were my idea came back as a prototype and were absolutely disgusting. Everyone was worried I’d want them, but I just said, ‘Scrap them.’"

A cartoon poking fun at US President GEORGE W BUSH is to appear on American TV in the new year (07).
The six-episode series, which will be screened on US channel Comedy Central, portrays Bush and his aides as children.
LIL’ BUSH: RESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES sees Bush in a number of kid-inspired scenarios - one episode features the leader getting upset over falafel on a cafeteria menu.
The cartoon began life as a series of five-minute clips commissioned by US mobile phone service Amp’d. The full-length episodes have been penned by THE SIMPSONS writer DONICK CARY.

AMERICAN IDOL winner TAYLOR HICKS has defended negative comments he made about the TV show that gave him his big break.
Hicks insists the derogatory words, recently published in Relix magazine, were misconstrued and taken out of context, and that he’s "very grateful" to be part of the American Idol success.
Earlier this year (06), the singer claimed the show was "fizzling out" and branded his Idol hit DO I MAKE YOU PROUD as simply "the show’s single" which he was forced to record.
But Hicks is now backtracking on his seemingly outspoken stance.
He says, "I’m giving up my crown soon. That’s what I meant. I’m just now learning about how the media can turn things around.
"I’m very grateful to that show and we’re like one big family. It was taken completely out of context. I will be watching next season on my tour bus.
"I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to be on American Idol. It’s a show that teaches a lot of young people about music and ties families together.
I’m very grateful."

Veteran actor RICHARD DREYFUSS has slammed the "dismal" lack of knowledge about the way America is run - and is planning his own civic turnaround.
The Oscar-winning star is spearheading a drive to promote citizenship in US schools, teaching children about the US constitution, the Bill Of Rights and making his countrymen more politically aware.
Dreyfuss says, "The teaching of civics presently in the United States is dismal and startling.
"We want to define the necessity of civics. What is it, and is it necessary? If it’s necessary, is it urgent? And if it’s urgent, what do we do? And then (we need) to proceed to literally design classes.
"It is time that we revive the notion that we can learn how to run the country and learn, not, you know, for Republicans and not for Democrats, but learn how to run the Constitution."

KYLIE MINOGUE is considering keeping her hair short permanently, because it makes her look like MIA FARROW.
The Australian singer is growing her locks back after undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.
But even though she is now fully healthy, Minogue admits she is tempted not to grow it back.
She explains, "One of the few benefits of what I have been through is that I now have really thick hair. I have to decide whether to keep it short or to let it grow.

Cult British rocker BILLY CHILDISH hated his father so much as a young man he made plans to kill him.
The singer/poet/writer was so scared his absent dad would seriously assault himself or his mother that he once beat him up on a rare visit to the family home.
The 47-year-old says, "He bullied (my mother). This particular day he picked an argument. I thought he was capable of killing her or me. He was in a sleeping bag under the table. I asked him to leave and he didn’t move. He said I was a stupid boy, not a man.
"I dragged him to the stairs, shoved his clothes at him, and told him to get out. I punched him in the face a couple of times and he fell down the stairs and knocked his head on the stone step at the bottom.
"I had planned to kill him on a number of occasions and now I had the opportunity where I could actually finish him off, but luckily I didn’t."

A source told Britain’s People newspaper: "The marriage is near rock-bottom.
They’ve been putting on a united front in public but behind closed doors their marriage has come under strain. The publicity surrounding the adoption has created a difficult atmosphere in their home. After a heart-to-heart they decided to seek the help of a marriage guidance specialist." Guy and Madonna’s relationship - which has previously been rocked by the singer’s busy work schedule and her fascination with the Kabbalah - reportedly came under a new strain after Guy felt left out from the highly-publicised adoption battle for fourteen-month-old David Banda.
The source added: "Madonna and Guy both dote on little David but it is her attitude that can irritate and upset Guy. She drove the whole adoption process from start to finish and Guy was left trailing in her slipstream just nodding and going along with things." Kate has been sent a letter by The World Society for the Protection of Animals appealing to her to boycott fur.
The RSPCA and the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade have backed the letter.
PETA - who ran an anti-fur campaign in the 90s featuring a picture of Kate and other supermodels in the nude - has launched a website, BloodyBurberry.com, which shows pictures of dead animals superimposed on images of models.
PETA spokesman Yvonne Taylor said: "As the high-profile face of this company, Kate falls into this. We believe that if she understood what happens in the fur industry then she would stop wearing fur." Kate has also been criticised for remaining as the face of Burberry, who use real fur, while signing a £50 million contract to design for anti-fur company TopShop.
A PETA spokesman said: "It shows that she does not have any ethics but is willing to take money for whatever she can get."

The outrageous British comedian has agreed to host the prestigious ceremony after being approached by bosses. It will be the first time the event has been broadcast live in over 15 years.
Peter Jamieson, co-Chairman of the BRITs organising committee, said, "We always promised that the BRITs 2007 would be an edgy, exciting show. First we announced we’d broadcast live. Then we announced Oasis as our Outstanding Contribution Award winner. And now there’s Russell Brand." Brand, famous for his eccentric dress sense and lewd quips, admits he can’t wait for the ceremony - which is being held at London’s Earls Court on February 14, Valentine’s Day - and has promised to cause mayhem.
He said: "I am going to be the ringleader at this carnival of mayhem and I’m really looking forward to it." Brand is especially looking forwarding to seeing his close friend Noel Gallagher collect the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award with his Oasis bandmates.
He added: "Oasis and other rock royalty will be there with me so there will be a risk of expletives going out across the UK." Acts already confirmed to perform at the event, the 27th annual BRIT Awards, include Oasis, Razorlight and the Scissor Sisters.
The nominations will be unveiled in London on January 16.
