The refugee camps that featured in GEORGE CLOONEY’s Darfur documentary earlier this year (06) have been destroyed as the civil war atrocities in The Sudan reach appalling new levels.
Clooney and his father NICK visited the war-torn region and shot footage of the desperation there in a bid to help boost the Save Darfur campaign.
The Clooneys interviewed several refugees, who told them all about the terrible conditions they are force to live under - and now the movie star has learned that many of those who spoke to him have been killed.
He says, "We’ve got a lot of work to do in Darfur. Nothing has changed. In fact, in the place we had gotten into (the Darfur refugee camps) everybody’s been killed.
"You talk to the under secretary of the UN (United Nations) and you talk to anybody over there at the UN and they all agree it’s gonna get a lot worse before it gets better. I don’t quite understand that." But Clooney refuses to point the finger of blame, accepting it’s a very difficult issue to resolve: "You can’t go in barrelling with bombs or guns because we can’t attack the government of Sudan.
"What it really requires is some sort of political discussion with these people, and, since we don’t do business with them, we need help from China, Egypt, Russia."

LATEST: Oscar winner GEORGE CLOONEY is happy to take the blame for pal DANNY DEVITO’s intoxicated appearance on US talk show THE VIEW - but he found his antics hilarious.
DeVito appeared drunk on the show last Wednesday (29NOV06) after partying with Clooney and the pair’s publicist STAN ROSENFELD the night before.
Clooney tells USA Today, "Danny is a grown man. I know not to drink too much of it, because it is really strong. Danny kept going after I was done. He clearly got more hammered than I did." The two actors agreed to mention each other on TV talk shows the next day and Clooney was thrilled to see his pal looking the worse for wear on The View.
He says, "I came home from doing (TV show) (LIVE WITH) REGIS & KELLY and turned on The View to see Danny say something. The minute he walked out, I thought, ‘Boy, this is going to be fun!’" DeVito went on a rant against US President GEORGE W BUSH calling him "a numbnuts" and described his sexual antics with wife RHEA PERLMAN when they stayed at The White House.
Clooney adds, "I don’t think anyone took great offence at it. He is one of the funny drunks in the world as opposed to the angry, mean ones. It actually, truly made me laugh until I cried when I watched him. So I’ll take the heat."

Former MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE star JUSTIN BERFIELD bought pal JESSICA SIMPSON’s former matrimonial home and now he’s producing her new film.
The ambitious 21-year-old has set up his own production company, J2TV/J2 Pictures, and Simpson’s new film, BLONDE AMBITION, is on his slate.
The actor is also developing a biopic about GRATEFUL DEAD star JERRY GARCIA.

JESSICA SIMPSON burst into tears last night (03NOV06) after forgetting the words to a DOLLY PARTON song she was performing during the Kennedy Center Honors event.
Two years after sister ASHLEE’s lip-syncing debacle on TV show SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE hit the headlines, the DUKES OF HAZZARD star showed that live mishaps run in the family.
Performing a cover of Parton’s NINE TO FIVE hit with AMERICAN IDOL star CARRIE UNDERWOOD at Sunday’s bash in Washington DC, Simpson stumbled over the song lyrics.
She relied heavily on cue cards to sing the song and missed a few lines. She then abruptly ended her performance saying, "Dolly, you make me so nervous I can’t even sing the words right." Her efforts were met with little applause, prompting embarrassed Simpson to dash off stage, reportedly in tears.
She appeared to be crying when she and others involved in the tribute show returned to the stage.
As WENN went to press it was not known if the performance will be edited out of the TV broadcast, which will air later this month (26DEC06).

Former NYPD BLUE star RICK SCHRODER is teaming up with KIEFER SUTHERLAND for the sixth season of hit TV series 24.
Schroder signed on for a regular role in the series, which kicks off with a two-night premiere in the US on 14 and 15 January (07).
He will play Counter Terrorism Unit operative MIKE DOYLE, who joins with Sutherland’s character JACK BAUER to pull off key field operations.
The series has recruited several high-profile cast members recently including CHAD LOWE, REGINA KING, POWERS BOOTHE, PETER MacNICOL, JAMES CROMWELL, KAL PENN and DAVID HUNT.

NICOLAS CAGE persuaded RICHARD CARPENTER to embrace his CARPENTERS-loving comic book superhero GHOST RIDER by personally calling the pianist and confessing his love for his late sister.
Cage decided his tormented movie character should share his own fondness for The Carpenters but he initially struggled to convince Richard Carpenter that he wouldn’t be poking fun at the hitmaking siblings.
He reveals, "I made him a KAREN CARPENTER fan. I love Karen Carpenter’s voice, honestly, and Richard Carpenter didn’t want to participate at first, but I explained how much I cared about Karen’s voice and thought it was the most beautiful voice of all time. It was genuine so he was OK with it.
"We even got the rights to use (The Carpenters hit) SUPERSTAR on the soundtrack. You should check out SONIC YOUTH doing it.
"My point there was that the Ghost Rider alter-ego, JOHNNY BLAZE, is trying to keep the devil away, and Karen Carpenter and jelly beans relax him.
"If he was a chain-smoking, Jack Daniels-guzzling guy, which is originally how he was drawn, he’d be inviting the devil in and I thought he’d be trying to avoid the devil."

Cult filmmaker DAVID LYNCH is selling coffee to fund the promotional campaign for his new movie INLAND EMPIRE.
The TWIN PEAKS director has developed the David Lynch Signature Cup and is selling tubes of espresso, decaf and house roast with accessories on his website DavidLynch.com.
The coffee will also be available at cinemas showing his new film, which stars LAURA DERN as a forgotten actress attempting a comeback.
Profits from sales will go towards covering costs on a planned 2007 American promotional tour as the director travels from city to city personally selling the film, which has not been able to find a US distributor, to cinema bosses.
He says, "(It’ll be) just like LORETTA LYNN in COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER - ‘Throw the records in the car, we’re hitting the road.’"

ANNE MARGARET ‘SANDY’ STURGES, who used the unfinished manuscript of an autobiography by her late husband, film auteur PRESTON STURGES, as the basis for the book PRESTON STURGES BY PRESTON STURGES, has died. She was 79.
Sturges died last Tuesday (28NOV06) at her home in Manhattan Beach, California after battling cancer, according to her son TOM STURGES.
Decades after her husband died of a heart attack in 1959, Sturges edited together excerpts from his letters and diaries and combined them with his incomplete manuscript to create his autobiography.
Sandy Sturges was in her early 20s and her husband in his 50s when they married in 1951. It was his fourth marriage, her second.
He gained fame as the writer and director of romantic comedies such as THE LADY EVE and THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN’S CREEK.
The couple had two children, PRESTON JR, and Tom, and spent long periods in Europe before Preston Sturges died.

British filmmaker STEPHEN FREARS has scoffed at continual conspiracy theories surrounding the 1997 death of DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES, insisting she died as a result of some terrible driving.
Frears visited the Paris, France tunnel where the beloved princess died in a car crash while researching his movie THE QUEEN, which fictionalises the royal family’s response to the tragedy - and he’s convinced no foul play was afoot on the fateful night.
In the film, news footage of the princess and a lookalike are used to re-enact the events of the terrible August night and then the screen fades to black as Diana’s car enters the tunnel where she was to lose her life.
Frears believes Diana should be allowed to rest in peace and the people promoting conspiracy theories about how she died and who was responsible should stop interfering.
He states, "I’ve been in the tunnel and I don’t know what these people are talking about.
"I think the truth is more banal… It was people driving too fast.
"I’m not sympathetic… to conspiracy theories."

Former BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 star TORI SPELLING has signed a deal to write her memoirs, due out in the spring of 2008.
The 33-year-old actress, who is expecting her first child with husband DEAN McDERMOTT, has not yet informed her family, with whom she’s had a tense relationship, about the book.
The star has reportedly been estranged from her mother CANDY, and describes her relationship with her brother RANDY as "OK".
She tells USA Today, "I hope that it doesn’t cause more damage. Randy’s kind of caught in the middle because he has a very close relationship with my mother and a very close relationship with me." As for her mother, she says, "I wish things were different. My mother and I have always had a difficult relationship. There has always been love, and I don’t doubt now that there’s love.
Among the topics she plans to cover in the book are plastic surgery, past relationships, and her treatment in her father AARON SPELLING’s last will and testament.
When the TV mogul died in June (06), he left behind an estate estimated to be worth more than $300 million (£154 million), but Tori reportedly received "less than $1 million".
She adds, "You have to take everything with a grain of salt. I’m not ashamed to admit that circumstances have changed, and you work with things the best you can."

Rockers MUSE now look set to become the first act to headline a show at the new Wembley Stadium in London after plans to open the famous venue with shows by BON JOVI, THE ROLLING STONES and TAKE THAT fell flat.
Muse have booked the venue for 16 June (07) and hope to fill it with 75,000 fans.
The stadium, which housed London’s LIVE AID and was the home field of the country’s soccer team, has been closed for major renovation since 2000.
Planned 2006 concerts there featuring Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones and Take That had to be re-located when the re-opening plans were stalled.
Muse drummer DOMINIC HOWARD admits the landmark show is a dream come true for his band: "It’s something we’ve dreamed of in the past and now definitely seems the right time to do it. It’s going to be amazing, overwhelming."

LATEST: Troubled country singer KEITH URBAN has completed his stint at a rehabilitation facility and has reunited with his wife of five months, NICOLE KIDMAN.
The couple were spotted having brunch on Sunday (03DEC06) at celebrity hang-out the Polo Lounge in Los Angeles.
They were last seen together on 12 November (06), outside the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, California, where Urban was seeking help for alcohol abuse.
Urban had been in the in-patient rehabilitation programme since 19 October (06), after revealing his alcoholism in a press statement. He was expected to stay there for 35 to 40 days.
His representative says the singer is "still undergoing treatment".
This is not Urban’s first visit to rehab - in 1998, he checked into the Cumberland Heights treatment center in Nashville, Tennessee, seeking treatment for cocaine and alcohol abuse.

Hollywood superstar GEORGE CLOONEY is in mourning after his pet pig died at the age of 18.
The SYRIANA actor lived with his beloved MAX in his Hollywood home - and the pair even slept together in the same bed when Clooney was without a female companion.
Clooney says, "He was as old a pig as the vets had ever seen. I was really sad, because he’s been a big part of my life.
"It has been a bad year for my pets, I had a bulldog that died this year too.
"It’s strange how animals become a bit part of your family. They really become a big issue with you." However, Clooney has no plans to replace Max.
He adds, "I think Max covered all my pig needs."
